     Biographical note 
 Surveyor and engineer, Martin Tobey Hilton (1817-1898) was a native of Maine who moved to Kentucky in 1853 to work for the Lexington & and the Big Sandy Railroad Company. He settled in Ashland, Kentucky, in 1855. He was responsible for surveying and laying out the city of Ashland.    
   
     Scope and Contents 
 The Hilton family diaries (dated 1840-1904; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) includes diaries kept by Martin Tobey Hilton and his daughter, Mary Henrietta Hilton. The diaries record information on weather conditions, social events, and family matters. Martin Tobey Hilton's diaries contain information about his work as a surveyor and engineer. Two of the diaries, for 1854-1855 and for 1898, contain receipts and other papers.
