?It was a combination of things which enabled Kentucky to capture the 34th annual UKIT, defeating Boston 81-69. For instance UK was propelled by: a) Freshman Rex Chapman's downtown jumpers; b) Ed Davender's slashing moves resulting in plenty of buckets; c) Forward Richard Madison and his ability to hit 10 of II free throws and grab a game high 15 boards and d) Eventually, four Boston University players fouled out, while another player had four.
"We were in trouble there for a little while," said Wildcat head coach Eddie Sutton, who is in his second season at Kentucky. "Once I looked up and there was less than eight minutes left in the ballgame and we were in trouble (trailing 58-57). The final score is not indicative of how close that game was."
The 'Cats even trailed 62-61 with 6:17 left
in the championship contest. Nevertheless, the come-from-behind win marked the Wildcats' 26 conquest of the UKIT championship trophy. Chapman finished the game with a game-high 26 points while steady Ed Davender scored 23. For his efforts throughout the tourney (36 points, six assists) Davender was named the UKIT's Most Valuable Player. Chapman was selected to the all-tournament squad.

*The Kentucky Wildcats made it eight wins in a row and 1-0 in the Southeastern Conference by blowing out an undefeated Georgia team 95-69 before 16.000 fans in Atlanta. The Bulldogs led 25-23 before the 'Cats reeled off 16 straight points and exploded to a 45-28 lead by the half. Overall, the Wildcats hit 43 of 69 shots for a sizzling 62.3 percent from the floor. The guards led the way as Kyle Macy hit 12 of 18 attempts from the field for
28 points and Dwight Anderson scored 20 points. Georgia's Dominque Wilkins contributed 21 to lead the Bulldog attack.
?Kentucky offensive line coach Jon Mirilovich has resigned his post on Fran Curd's staff and accepted the position of offensive  coordinator  at  Louisiana State

*Kerry Baird, a 6-foot-2, 185-pound all-state receiver from Franklin-Simpson High School, has signed an SEC letter-of-intent with Kentucky. He is the eighth in-state signee for UK.
*Joe B. Hall's Wildcats held on to win this year's UKIT, downing a tough Purdue team 61-60 in the championship contest. Hall called Purdue "the best team we have faced." The Boilmakers led 56-53 with 3:43 left, but the 'Cats came back and held on with some clutch free throw shooting behind tournament MVP Kyle Macy and Fred Cowan. Those two led Kentucky with 18 points apiece. You'll recall that Macy transferred to Kentucky from Purdue and as a sophomore helped the Wildcats capture the national title in 1978. Lee Rose's Boilermakers were led by All-America center Joe Barry Carroll, who scored 25 points.
*UK did not play well, but still managed to down California 78-52 in the first round of the UKIT. Kentucky was lifeless throughout but still managed to take a 40-28 lead by the half over the outmanned visitors. LaVon Williams and Kyle Macy led UK with 12 points. Fred Cowan had 11 points and 10 rebounds while Sam Bowie contributed 10 points and 13 rebounds.
Twelve Years Ago
*The Wildcats moved up to 18th in the United Press International poll. Indiana is the No. 1 team in the country followed by Maryland.
*Top-ranked Indiana was forced into overtime before defeating Kentucky 77-68 at Louisville's Freedom hall. Coach Joe Hall was very pleased after his 'Cats almost knocked off Bobby Knight's undefeated Hoosiers. Kent Benson of Indiana sent the game into overtime when his desparation tip-in fell through the twine just prior to the regulation buzzer. Larry Johnson was outstanding for UK, scoring 16 points while Jack Givens poured in 20 points. Kentucky controlled the contest, leading 60-56 with under three minutes to go in regulation against the Veteran Hoosier squad.
?UK had a tough time but managed to capture its own University of Kentucky Invitational Tournament. In the first round, the 'Cats slipped by a stubborn Georgia Tech unit 64-62. It didn't get any easier in the championship contest as the 'Cats took home the trophy with an 82-74 conquest over Oregon State.

?Kentucky's 6-11 sophomore center Jim Andrews came off the bench to spark a lackluster Wildcat team to an 84-78 win over Oregon State. Andrews had played only 14 minutes and hadn't scored in Kentucky's previous games. This time, however, he came in to score 19 points, all in the second half. Oregon State led at halftime 42-37. Mike Casey also scored 19 points and Kent Hollenbeck added 18.
*A fired-up Notre Dame team, led by the offensive wonders of Austin Carr, downed UK 99-92 in Louisville. Carr, playing what he called his best game, hit 21 of 32 shots and finished with 50 points. Sophomore Col-lis Jones contributed 25 points and 14 rebounds to the Irish' cause. The Wildcats got 25 points from Mike Casey and 19 from
center Tom Payne. Larry Steele returned to the UK team following an injury to his hand and scored 15 points.
*The Marathon AAU team beat the Wildcat frosh 103-86 behind 35 points by Phil Argen-to. Rick Drewitz paced the Kittens with 25 points while Wendell Lyons scored 21 points and Ronnie Lyons 17.
Thirty-Two Years Ago
?Kentucky defeated Minnesota 72-65 in the first round of the UKIT. The Wildcats led 36-26 at the half. Center Bob Burrow scored 27 points, Gerry Calvert 16 and Jerry Bird 15.
?Refusing to crack under pressure, Dayton upset the Wildcats 89-74 in the championship contest of the UKIT. This marked the first time the Wildcats have ever lost in their own tournament. The defeat gives the 'Cats two home losses this year, the first time they have lost two home games since 1927. UK center and Ail-American Bob Burrow missed the
