     Biographical note 
 Edwin Dun (1848-1931) was originally from Ohio and advised the Japanese government on modernizing agricultural techniques during the Meiji modernization period. In 1892 Dun was appointed as United States ambassador to Japan and served until 1897. After 1897 Dun was the Japan representative of the Standard Oil company.    
   
     Scope and Contents 
 The Dun family papers (dated 1810-1927; 0.9 cubic feet; 2 boxes) primarily consist of letters, signed agreements and deeds, and receipts pertaining to the Dun family's surveys and sales of land in Ohio and Virginia. Also included are Elizabeth Dun's will and a group of letters sent from Edwin Dun in eastern Asia to his family.
