? Kentucky basketball player Kenny 'Sky' Walker was named Most Valuable Player of the National Sports Festival, leading his South team to the Gold Medal in the tournament. Walker averaged 17 points and six rebounds per game. He finished the tourney hitting on 27 of 49 attempts from the field. Because of his performance in the tournament, Walker was named to be a part of a 12-man team that will travel to Spain on a junior men's team to play for the junior world title. Kentucky freshman James Blackmon also was named to the U.S. team.
? The University of Kentucky Athletics Association voted to allocate $3 million towards a swimming facility at the university. The facility will cost an estimated $5 million and hopes are that the other $2 million can be raised through private donations. Presently, the only swimming facility
on campus is a pool at Memorial Coliseum.
? In the National Basketball Association draft, three Kentucky players were selected. Guard Dirk Minniefield, UK's top playmaker, was taken in the second round by Dallas, but traded to the New Jersey Nets. Derrick Hord was the 67th pick overall, being drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers in the third round. The third UK player taken was Charles Hun. who was drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks in the sixth frame.

"It's no secret that he's concerned about the lack of discipline and personnel problems, a lack of winning program and lack of hope of a winning program under the present conditions.
"He (Brown) feels very strongly that Kentucky can compete with any university in that Kentucky should have a competitiive program nationally."
The source noted that even six months ago Brown went to University of Kentucky president Otis Singletary about the matter. Later, 7CP contacted Brown. And through press secretary Frank Ashley, the statement released read: "The Governor doesn't feel it's appropriate to discuss this matter at this time."
Since UK's 10-1 campaign, the 'Cats, under Curci's leadership, have recorded three consecutive losing campaigns. Problems off the field also have followed. UK athletics director Cliff Hagan noted that Curci, like all other Wildcat coaches, will be treated as such. That is, hired or fired by the UK Athletics Board. Hagan also mentioned that Curci's name or his program had not been brought up since the December meeting. It was then when the board voted to honor his remaining contract (at the time, four years left).
"Our program is run by the board." Hagan stressed.
Asked if he had heard about Allen replacing Curci (44-43-2 while at UK), Hagan said, ~'T have no kr 'Medge that it is true. That is

Curci, who was on vacation earlier in the month, did not return TCP's calls. Said Allen's son George Allen Jr, who is his father's agent: "I can't tell you anything about it right now. I have no comment."
?Kentucky football players Greg Wimber-ly, a receiver, and punter Chris Poulton have left the team. Wimberly. a 5-foot-10, 170-pounder, was to have been a senior this year. Before the 1980 campaign, Wimberly was suspended following his alleged involvement in a Lexington theft. Later, charges were dropped and Wimberly ended up playing in five games. He had a team-high 22.5 yards per catch. His biggest moment came when he caught a 59-yard touchdown against Tulane. Poulton was the 'Cats' No. 2 punter behind Randy Jenkins. He filled in for the injured Jenkins admirably. In his first game against Maryland he was the owner of a 55-yard kick. He finished his first year with a 36.9 average (51 punts). In his sophomore season Poulton booted for a 36.5 yards average. He came to walk-on.
? Indiana completed its two game sweep of the Kentucky All-Stars, defeating the hosts 109-96. It marked the first sweep since 1978 for the Hoosiers. However it was the state's fifth sweep in the past eight years. Cawood's Phil Cox connected for a game-high 36 points. The all-time scoring mark by a Kentucky player is held by former Western Kentucky great Jim McDaniels (42 points). Cox, Kentucky's Mr. Basketball, has signed to play for CM. Newton's Vanderbilt Commodores.

?In a poll conducted by the Birmingham News, sports information directors across the Southeastern Conference have once again selected Alabama as the odds on favorite to capture the league's football crown this season. The Tennessee Volunteers were picked to finish second followed by: Georgia, Auburn, Mississippi, LSU, Mississippi State, Florida, Kentucky and Vanderbilt.
? At least nine of i- ltucky's gridiron games in the 1980 seasoi ;tl be broadcast on a delayed basis on Lexi. ^ .on WKYT-TV, while the Oklahoma game may be aired live. The only game guaranteed not to be on the tube is UK's encounter with arch rival Tennessee in K-town.
? Guard Dennis Johnson scored all six of his points in the final 90 seconds to lead the Kentucky All-Stars to a 96-93 win over the Indiana All-Stars in the second game of this basketball series. The win gave the Bluegrass State a split of this year's series and marked the second straight year that Kentucky has won in Indianapolis. Indiana barely won the first encounter, played in Louisville's Freedom Hall, by a score of 82-80. In going down to defeat, Kentucky was led by Johnson with 20 points while Dicky Beal added 17. A week later Kentucky earned revenge when Owensboro Red Devil product Dwight Higgs turned in a brilliant performance, scoring 29 points and grabbing 18 boards. Beal, the Covington Holmes star and future Kentucky Wildcat, scored 13 points and dazzled the Market Square Arena crowd with his game-high seven assists.
?The search is still on for an assistant sports information director at Kentucky, whose main duties are to work with the men's basketball program. The job previously was held by Jack Perry, who was re-assigned within the athletic department.

? Junior-to-be Wildcat Rick Robey is spending the summer working at Seth C. Hancock's Claibome Farm in Paris, Ky., in an
effort to get back in shape for the upcoming basketball campaign. The 6-foot-10 Robey was injured for most of last year but now believes he will be back to 100 percent for the 1976-77 season.
?Kentucky football coach Fran Curci has announced that his players will have an 11 p.m. curfew and will be living in the same dormitory together next season, following a campaign which led to several off-the-field embarrassments.

? Kentucky made a clean sweep of their annual All-Star hoop series with its northern neighbors Ohio, thanks to a 107-96 victory. It marked the first time Kentucky has managed a sweep in the series, which dates back nine years. Raymond (Corky) Withrow, a 6-foot-4 jump-shot artist from the Golden Tide of Central City, was the 'Star of Stars' for Kentucky. For the second time he sparkled for a 23-point performance. Jim Darrow of Akron led Ohio with 25 points. Ohio continues to lead the series 12-7.
?King Kelly Coleman, who rewrote the Kentucky high school basketball record books, won't be attending West Virginia after all because he failed to meet entrance requirements. He is conferring with Wildcat coaches. Reportedly, West Virginia is under NCAA investigation because Coleman's close friends claim the school has given him $75 a month for the past two years and his mother says folks in West Virginia offered to put a car in his name. Also, Kelly and his bride reportedly received a gasoline courtesy card and an apartment. He does not yet have his high school diploma. Kentucky coach Adolph Rupp has told Coleman he would accept him if he passes the entrance exam.
