[Identification of item], Adam Rankin papers, 1780-1882. 1816-1822 (bulk dates), 1VF52W114, AAP0237LM, Special Collections, University of Kentucky. Land owner, minister. A graduate of Liberty Hall, now Washington and Lee University, Lexington, Va, Adam Rankin was licensed to preach in 1782 by the Virginia Presbytery. He came to Lexington, Ky. in 1784 to become pastor of the Presbyterian Church. In the 1790s his views on the psalms came under attack, and after several years of exile, accusations and church trials, he was suspended. Legal papers regarding a law suit filed by Adam Rankin, a Presbyterian minister, comprise the majority of this collection. Accession 52W114 is an indenture, dated 1788, made by Adam Rankin with Archibald Walker for 400 pounds of Virginia currency. The materials of accession 52W116 are of a legal nature and embody approximately forty pieces concerning a law suit filed by Rankin against John Maxwell over land titles. Depositions, summons, answers to complaints, land surveys and judgments are included. Some are dated as early as 1780, but appear to be copies made at a later date. Among the persons making depositions are Hallet M. Winslow, Robert Patterson and John McConnell. Arranged somewhat chronologically. Rankin, Adam, 1755-1827. Maxwell, John, 1747-1819.
