             Scope and Contents note 
             The Lucien Beckner papers comprise business letters for the Beckner & Beckner law firm established by Lucien and his father, Judge W. M. Beckner, as well as personal family correspondence. Also included are member listings for the Burley Tobacco Society and the American Society of Equity Tobacco, a scrapbook for the Tobacco Grower's Association, and a report on the Burley Tobacco Society's status of relation to the American Society of Equity. Finally, the collection contains historical photographs of Kentucky, specifically of Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt's visit in 1937. 
         
         
             Biographical note 
             Lucien Beckner, geologist and longtime curator of the Louisville Free Public Library Museum, was born in Winchester, Kentucky, in 1872 to William Morgan and Elizabeth Taliaferro Beckner. He earned his education from multiple institutions, such as the Louisville Military Academy, Centre College, the University of Kentucky, Transylvania University, and the University of Pennsylvania. In 1894, Beckner married Marie Daviess Warren of Danville, Kentucky. Throughout his lifetime, he dabbled in a wide range of career paths, including lawyer, engineer, secretary, naturalist, auditor, historian, poet, artist, teacher, journalist, and mathematician. At one point, Beckner owned and edited the 
                 Winchester Sun  and 
                 Clark County Republican  newspapers, assisted in establishing the Lexington and Eastern branch of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad, and helped build a railroad in Ecuador. He actively participated in various organizations, serving as executive secretary of the Burley Tobacco Society and the Burley Tobacco Growers Association, as secretary of the Filson Club, as an officer of the Kentucky Historical Society, and as president of the Kentucky Academy of Science. Beckner died in Louisville, Kentucky, in 1963.
