Game 1
KENTUCKY 71, Austin Peay 69 November 29, 198G Rupp Arena
After a 32-4 dream season, Eddie Sutton's second year as coach of the Kentucky Wildcats almost began with a nightmare.
The Cats opened the year by squeaking past Austin Peay, 71-69.
UK appeared to have the game in hand with a 12-point lead midway through the second half but the comfortable margin vanished as the Governors stormed back to take a 68-69 lead with 39 seconds left.
The Wildcats were saved by sophomore Irv Thomas who tossed in a 12-foot jumper with 18 seconds left. A Paul Andrews free throw closed out the game scoring.
