Although the Wildcats were eliminated in the first round of the NCAA tournament by Ohio State, Kentucky did win a national championship in cheerleading. The UK cheerleaders captured their second national title in the last three years in January when they won the Ford College Cheerleading Championships in San Diego, Calif. The squad dedicated the win to Dale Baldwin, the captain of the squad who was paralyzed from the neck down as a result of an accident suffered before the Blue-White scrimmage at Louisville's Freedom hall Nov. 4.
1986-87 was a banner year for the Southeastern Conference, as eight league teams competed in post-season action, including a conference record SIX in the NCAA. Previously, the best (number-wise) for the SEC was in 1985, when five teams (Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky and LSU) received NCAA bids and two (Florida and Tennessee) received NIT bids.
The league compiled an 8-6 record in
the 1986-87 NCAA, led by LSU, which advanced to the final game of the Midwest Regional before being knocked off by Indiana.
The showing was a definite financial bonanza for the league, as the appearances generated an estimated $2.6 million in revenue.
According to a recent edition of The Birmingham News, Kentucky has the second-highest graduation rate in the Southeastern Conference during the last decade. The paper reported that UK graduated 20 of 33 lettermen during that time for a percentage of 60.6. Vanderbilt placed first in the league with a 64.9 graduation percentage.
"Naturally, we are pleased to rank so high," said UK coach Eddie Sutton. "We have always stressed academics here and that speaks highly of our program.
"I might add that those figures include players who did not complete their four years here, so in reality, our graduation rate is actually higher than those figures reported."
