23rd Sunday Went down to Col Coopers in the morning and then went
to Church Elder Allin preached this has been a beautifull day and this is
a lovely evening we (that is myself and Adelia) walked over to Mrs Gibsons
this evening and to night I hear the Enogs in the Branches singing their
cheerfull notes welcoming spring again' and I am truly glad the winter is
gone and I can say truly I hail with delight the near approach of spring
as this has been the most dull and cheerless winter I have ever spent
untill within the last two weeks its monotony has been relieved by the
company and companionship of one with whom I am henceforth to tread the
devious paths of this life be that life long or short I will only say that
thus far I am satisfied and trust the future will not be marred by the choice
I have made
I have truly cause to be thankfull for as I look arround me and -
think of the many blessings I now enjoy and contrast my condition with that
of others who one short year ago were here who now are either dead wounded
or in prison I have kept out or near enough out of this unholy warfare to
feel comparitively free and easy
2hth This has been another beautifull day I Loaded one wagon with
Tobacco thiyevening
25th Went to Henderson with one load of Tobacco sold on the street
to Barrett at $9 for good and Lugs the Load weighed Good 675 Lugs h7S
Amt to $103.50 this was a better price than I Have ever sold for yet
considering the order of the Tobacco the roads between here and Henderson
are allmost impassable
26th This has been a beautifull day I burnt my first plant bed this
evening and to night is truly a March night
27th Ag work on Plant Beds again to day this has been another
pleasant day ·
28th I have been Burning Plant Bed again to day this ends the P
month of Feb and closes the winter and I am not sorry as this has been
the most disagreeable winter I have ever experienced as it has rained
about half the time since the lst of Dec I have done but little on the
Farm this winter allthough I have a larger force than I have worked for
several years but think I will manage to get a full crop for all hands P
yet if March does not prove to be a winter month
The winter is gone and the spring is here yet evrything looks
gloomy and as.I read the news of the day it gives no assurance of a better
time soon as it seems this unholy war will never cease for amid all the `
reverses the South still seems to be firm while the North elated with suc-
as they say to crush out this rebellion whilst two of
the St} lc i .· e owers in the world appear on the eve of taking a hand in
_ ug ~ and if such should be the case god only knows when and where it
will end
