weather is again pleasant after our little foretaste of winter.
30th A Pleasant day I finished Hauling my suggr cane to Hosea
Smiths this morning &c
31st This is indeed a lovely day one that seems but too short to
realize its Beauty or enjoy its pleasant sunshine I Rode out on my mill
Land this evening in search of a Board tree and oh what a change a few weeks
have wrought in the appearance of the woods from the green of summer to
broih and fast falling leaf of Fall Time is truly speeding away away The
Su er is passed the harvest is over and old winter will soon be here with
its storms and feeble sunshine and if we in this part of the country were
alone to endure its rigors I would welcome it with pleasure But when I
think of the poor and helpless orphan and widow whose husband and Father
sleeps his last sleep on some of the many Battlefields all over the land
_ when I think of the many Thousands who have been drawn into this unholy
strife leaving their Families at Home to suffer when I think of the Poor
soldier who must endure its rigors un rotected from its stormy Blast I
I Shudder at its near approach this winter will Bring with it horrors be-
forgunknown in this country for allready Famine and Misery begin to stare
many in the face and if this should be a hard winter god help the Poor
But enough of this
This month in the begining was most too wet for Tobacco but
from the 10th up to the 26th it was fine weather for secureing late

materially injure the Late Tobacco in the house but upon the whole it
has been a fine month for the farmer and on this lovely Night I take
leave of her with a sigh cer her departure
