31st Sunday I was at Sabbath School this morning and also at
Preaching Elder Thurman Preached and went to singing in the evening the
day has been pleasant and showerry with this ends the month of May and the
spring of the year the past m nth has been a fine one on the Farmers as
it has neither been too wet or too dry yet cool and pleasant the prospect
for a good crop was never better and the Farmer could look with pleasure
into the future were it not for this dreadfull war
Ju e lst I set out some Tobacco this morning but the groundwas so
dry I had to quit we have had numerous showers of late but the ground
is verry dry yet I Helped to burry a little child of John Blaylocks
in the evening

sick in the evening the day was verry cool for the season

6th Went to Henderson to day I purchased from Miss Mary McCullagh
Thirty dollars worth of sabbath school books for the sabbath school at
the Methodist Church I was forcibly reminded of the Powers of Sabbath
schools over the mind of apparently Hardened and sordid man by a little
incident that occured to day I was stoped by the Pickets and my buggy
examined and as I had no permit to carry the sunday school Books out of
the city of Henderson I expected to have to go back for one but on tell-
ing the man who searched the buggy for what purpose I had purchased the
books he bade me Pass on for said he when I was a boy I loved the
sabbath school I loved to read those books and recited to me some of
his old lessons and emfqd1H1the request that I would give him one of
the Books to read in his leisure hours while doing his duty far away
from loved Friends and associations I gave him that Book of Books which
above all others we should study and read the New Testament and as I
turned away and left him to do his duty as a soldier in what I think
to be a a bad cause I could but wish that the little book would not
_ only revive early recollections but lead the erring mortal to seek an
interest in a higher source than an earthly power and enable him should
it be his lot to meet death on the Battle field to gain a nobler victory
than will everv be gained by Mortal Arms
7th This morning resembles the summer only in appearances for it
is cool enough for a March or April morning The spring and su mer so
far have been verry cool and pleasant I was at sabbath school this morn-
ing there appears to be an increased interest in our sabbath school and
allready it has a large number of scholars and I hope it will yet succeed
in bringing all the children of the neighborhood into a well organized and
well conducted sabbath school I was also at Preaching Elder Fallan
Preached
