18th I was hunting this morning &c and at B F Martins in the
evening I heard to day of the death of James E Cheatham it seems that
war and desease are sweeping away our friends on evry hand when last I
met with him I thought I could see disease and death stamped on his
countenance and when I conversed with him he seemed to have but little
hopes of living long and soon have those anticipations been verri§ied
Death has called him hence
9th This is a calm still Sabbath morning all nature seems trqn-
quill and the light breeze which scarcely ruffles the leaves on the trees
serves only to remind us that time like the summer breeze is speeding
onwards or more fitly like the clouds which obscure the morning sun will
soon pass away
I was at Sabbath School this morning and heard Mr McCuZLlagh '
address the Sabbath School at ll went to H F Coopers in the evening and
from there to singing
20th Went to Thos Smiths this morning and from there a cow hunting I
with John Jacobs &c
21st Doing nothing in Particular
22nd I had company to day and have been about the House all day
Bob Turner quit work for me to day at 12
23d Went to Henderson to day in company with Garett Mitchell I
was at the Fundeal of J E Ricketts in the evening V
2hth I was at B F Martins to dimer to day &c n _
25th the verry windows of heaven appeared to be opened last night
and the rain came down in torrents my tobacco crop is again overflowed
this has been the worst season for Tobacco I ever remember to have seen
t as my ground has not been dry enough to plough for a month and my crop
is a poor one
26th Sunday this is a lovely morning and I have been walking about
viewing my prospects for a crop but they are not Flattering went to ·
Sabbath School and Church this morning Elder McDaniels Preached and to
singing in the evening I
27th I was at work about the farm to day but the ground was too wet
to do much
28th Went to Henderson in company with G Mitchell
29th I had one hand cutting Hay at Mitchells to day I went down
there at 12 and from there I went to a Blackberrying &c
30th I went with William Melton to John Hites after meat this
morning I Bought 200 Pounds at 5% cts per Pound Came home to dinner
and went to Mitchells in the evening &c
