Blst To day brings me to the close of the month and I have spent
the last day Ploughing Tobacco a verry good way to spend a day but
rather a hard one especially in mean tobacco This month has been a wet
one throughout as the ground has been too wet to plough the most of the
time the Branches instead of being dry as they usually are at this time
of the year are full of water and nearly all of the low ground is drowned
out the Corn crop is a good one but the Tobacco looks badly and if we
have much more raining bad weather it will be allmost a failure for unless
we have a latef fall it will not have time to ripen
August lst This has been a warm day for the beginning of the Month
I went to the Steam Mill this m rning &c I assisted to Burry a little
child of A W Haskins to day thus as we Pass along the journey of life
we are ever reminded of the uncertainty of our days
2nd I was at Sabbath School and Church this morning Elder Fallen
Preached I was also at Singing in the evening
3d I went to the Election this morning and cast my vote for the
Wickliffe ticket but as it turned out it amounted to nothing as soon
after the Polls were opened according to the laws of the State of Ky
when but sixteen men had had the Privilege of Freemen the Privilege
which we once exercised unawed and unmolested of voting for the men of
our choice the Election was stoped by Military Orders and the Poél Book
taken Posession of by a Federal Captain Our state was placed under
Martial law for the Purpose pf Prostituting this Election and carrying
by force what they could not accomplish otherwise
Ky no doubt deserves this and worse treatment we have tamely "
bent our necks to the yoke and invited this despotism by a base truckling ·
to power we have become a by word and reproach to our Natural Brethren _
and the slaves of the Federal Government
Boasted land of Freedom Ky Once the Proud and Chivalrous State
whose sons were noted for this Bravery has now become the footstool of
Northern Abolitifonists I have no doubt that our lesson of to day has
been repeated all over the state and to morrows Papers will contain news T
of a great Union Abolition Majority in this state which will be taken
as the voice of the state by those who know no better _
hth Went to Henderson to day I learned that the Military authorities
had carried out the same Programa all over the county and the result was t
a small vote with a majority for the Union Candidates
Sth At work in Tobacco this morning and went to Lame & Co Mill
