18th I came home this Mbrning and went to Corrydon in the evening
19th Went to the Diamond Island Bend this Morning took dinner at
Mrs. Clays and went to G P Lillys to a Barn raising in the evening
20th I went to Union Co today in company with Sue Gibson Lydia
Clark & S E Martin took dinner and spent the evening at‘W S and Coleman
Coopers six Miles from Mdrganfield the crops in this portion of the
county look fine we had a verry Pleasant time as it wasbur first visit
to that portion of the county
2lst Left Coopers this Morning and went across a very hilly Portion
of Union Co to E A Clarks The crops of corn in this Portion of the County
are fine Came home in the evening and went to church at the Methodist

22nd This is My Birthday today I am Twenty Seven years old and still
living in single Blessedness I have been busy thrashing wheat today
23rd Finished thrashing Wheat this Morning and Helped Sam Cooper
raise his Barns in the evening
2hth Helped C M Taylor raise a Barn Today and went to B F Martin
in company with Sue Cotton in the evening
25th ‘Went L Powell & T M Robards this Morning Took one replevin
Bond came home and went to J H Davis in the evening
26th `Went to Henderson in company with G B Martin I saw Jacob Murphy
hung he was hung IS minutes to 9 oclock in the Morning a large crowd was
collected to see this disgusting spectacle showing the disposition of man
as a creature suffering their better natures to be governed by` their
More Brutish Principles I do not think one half the crowd got to see this
sight and it astonished me to witness the disappointment of some who had
C come a long distance
Murphy was a man of good appearance I should suppose he was
not over 25 years old fine form and altogether a fine healthy strong look-
ing man I arrived at the place just in time to see him step from the wagon
to the scaffold and he did so with as firm step and calm countenance as if
, he was going to adress the crowd instead of taking that awfull leap into
Eternity Father Durbin of the Catholic Church was with him on the scaffold
and adressed the crowd in a short but excellent speech on the dreadfull con-
sequences of leading lives of wickedness and the Practice of drinking intoxi-
cating liquors inflaming the Passion as Murphy had done and causing
him to imbrut his hands in the blood of a Fellow creature and oh what a les_
son this should be to evry one who Practices that worst of all evils drink-
ing intoxicating Liquors and let those who boast of theh"independence and
the control they posess over themselves Pause for awhile and think of the
fate of Iurfpgfand others I could Mention For to me tis an awful sight to
see a Fellow `eing in the Prime of life and usefulness die a Félons death
and that too caused by whiskey and oh how I felt for this young man as he
stood there upon that fatal drop calm and as composed as any one in that
