19th ‘Went to Henderson to day in company with G B Martin the weather
for this month has been verry dry and the roads are now with the exception
of the Flats dry and dusty we have had scarcely any rain for the past two
months Expenses &c $3 Paid Holloway &Co. $5 for two pair of shoes
20th I was compelled this morning to break the sabbath by hunting an
old cow and when I came home the Bees Swarmed but I could not Induce them
to stay with me Went to Hear Elder Plattenburg a Campbellite Preacher from
Henderson but I thought him rather too much impressed with the Idea of his
own greatness which I fear his congregation could not see as well as he
imagined I love to sit and hear an humhb devoted child of god preach no ‘
matter to what persuasion of Christians he may belong But when a man sets
himself in judgment upon others and holds himself an oracle from which no
one has a right to differ I can but feel contempt for him
I hear men say he is a great preacher but I do not consider a '
mere flash of oratory great Preaching for I would sooner hear an humble
Christian who with tears in his eyes and pureieligion in his heart tells his
hearers the familiar but truthfull story of the cross tells them of the love
of a saviour and the inestimable blessings conferred by the gift of our »
saviou$—purchased for us on Calvary's summit.
Away with a theory that there is nothing conferred upon Man only
that which he obtains by his own individual works and the hearing from the
lips of another a theory of forms &c
