4th Went to Henderson again today I delivered one Load of
Bens Tobacco that weighed Good 903 Lugs 410 Trash 170 Amt to
$134. 70 also two Loads of my own Crop that weighed Good 1121
Lugs 1015 Trash 600 I only got $7 for my Lugs the two Loads
Brought me $195. 15 Expenses &c $15
5th I remained in town last night at J E Fegans After supper
we walked out to a Political Meeting and while I was viewing for the
first time how City People get Ready to vote there was raised a cry
of Fire I had heard the cry often before but I thought this one of
Peculiar significance for a city whose Inhabitants were about half
of them Drunk and wild with excitement to Take Fire on Main Street ‘
I thought surely God intended to Punish such a People I went with
the crowd to the Fire and as I stood and gazed upon that xx awf ull
Spectable looking around me to see other buildings catch it seemed
like a Miracle that only two Houses was Burned but so it was Iwith-
out an engine of any sort the Fire was kept from spreading I and
the adjoining houses were not injured but little (So much for my con-
jectures) I was at what was called a convention to day where I wit-
` nessed a scene of excitement which should be a disgrace to Conven-
tions in the future The Convention was called to appoint delegates
to a District Convention to nominate a Judge of the Court of Appeals

Rudy and on an account in favor of Rudyms & Knight I Paid John C S
Stapp $42. 60 For Cider Mill Bot of him last Fall &c A
_ 6th Sunday We that is B F & G B Martin & Myself concluded to
Break the Sabbath by taking a look at the Damage done by the high
water we rode over a good Portion of the Bottom I found nine head
of my Missing Cattle I Paid out $15 to Person who had fed them for
me this was a poor way of spending ones Sabbath but I hope that the
circumstances will justify the deed
7th Went to Henderson the Cow Case was again Continued by
John Green and if it keeps on in this way we will never get a trial ‘
Expenses &c $5 we had a disagreeable snow storm this evening
8th About the Farm &c to day
9th Went to the Sale of Dr John McLauchlan to day Property
did not sell as well as I expected I sold a yoke of Cattle Belonging
to my Sister Mary Ann for $124 on a credit untill Jan lst 1871 I
received to day from James Bruce for a Steer $35 and from John
McLendon $3
