August lst -· The month commenced xv this morning Pleasant
and Seasonable enough for the Crops I went to the Bottom this
morniéi
2nd Went to Henderson in Company with J H Jacobs Evrything
seems to be dull in the City

3d Sunday There was no praching and I spent the Day with my
Brother Thomas Smith His strength I fear is fast failing him and I
fear his days are allmost numbered
4th I was Clerk of the Election at Smith Mills to day There
was no interest taken by the People as there was none but Democratic .
Candidates to be voted for and the vote was a verry small one
5th I went down to the Anderson Farm &c to day
6th Abdut the Farm[&c

8th I went to H P Randolphs to day &c
9th About the Farm in the Morning at Church meeting in the
evening Elder Miller Preached
lOth I spent the Day and Night with my Poor afflicted Brother

llth & l2th I spent Both days and most of the Nights with my 4
Brother
13th My Poor Brother seemed to Struggle all the day Long and
up to 15 minutes after 9 oclock at night when he Calmly fell asleep .
in the arms of a Mercifull Saviour
A Dear Oh how can I write it My only Brother gone and
left me He had of late years seemed nearer to me than ever and in
his Illness he salemed to cling to me with allmost a Childish affection
A Tom suffered as I hope never to see another Person Suffer
with Cancer on his side It had grown to such size that it seemed
strange that he could have lived as long with it as he did Yet he bore
his sufferings with Christian Fortitude seldom Complaining He was
allways glad to meet his friends and seemed restless when left alone
During the day he seemed anbcious to talk with friends and I Heard him
l say more than once that all was Bright around him He exhorted one V
