1951: UK vs. LOUISVILLE
Step One toward the Wildcats' third National Championship took place in Raleigh, North Carolina's William Neal Reynolds Coliseum. Kentucky defeated the Louisvilie Cardinals 79-68 before a capacity crowd of 12,500. The Cats went on to defeat three more opponents and win the title. They finished the year, their first in Memorial Coii-seum, 32-2, losing only in the opening round of the Sugar Bowl Classic and in the finals of the SEC Tournament.
The victory wasn't secured until late in the second half. Louisville led 64-60 with 9:25 to play when Kentucky scored 10 unanswered points and took a 70-64 lead. The Cardinals cut the margin to 71-68 but they were held scoreless the remainder of the game.
Coach Adolph Rupp's squad won the game at the charity strip where they made good on 21 of 29 shots.
The Cardinals' accuracy kept them in the game, which Kentucky was favored to win by as many as 30 points. In the first half, the Cards hit 43 per cent. They finished with 36.4 per cent. The Wildcats, meanwhile, connected on only 26 per cent in the opening half but upped their game percentage to 32.5.
Shelby Linville's 23 points led the Kentucky scoring attack. Frank Ramsey and Skippy Whitaker tallied 16 and 14 points respectively for the winners.
Bob Brown and Bob Naber each scored 15 points for the losers.
