DR. PORTER L. FORTUNE, JR.
University Chancellor
Dr. Porter L. Fortune, Jr., the University's 12th Chancellor and 14th administrative head, came to The University of Mississippi from a distinguished career in both the academic and business fields.
Born in Old Fort, N. C, Dr. Fortune received his B.A. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received the M.A. degree from Emory University.
Dr. Fortune's teaching career has included assignments at Emory University, the University of North Carolina, and the University of Southern Mississippi, where he began as an assistant professor in 1948 and rose to the position of Dean of the University, a position he held until October, 1961, when he became Executive Secretary of the National Exchange Club. He held this position until he was named Chancellor of The University.
BOB WELTLICH
Head Coach
In just four short seasons, Bob Weltlich has lifted the basketball program at The University of Mississippi from the depths of the second division to SEC contender.
Never was that more evident than last season when the Rebels posted a 17-13 overall record and advanced through two rounds of the NIT, the school's first-ever postseason tourney appearance.
And not far behind that first-division finish came consensus Coach-of-the-Year honors for the 34-year-old Weltlich.
Weltlich traces his coaching roots back to Rittman, Ohio, where he coached high school basketball for two seasons after graduating from Ohio State in 1967. From there, he joined Bobby Knight in 1969 at West Point and the two coaches remained together through two years there and another five at Indiana.
