The collection represents an important era in American history during which the railroads were at the fore of the nation's progress and expansion across the continent.

The Paul Thompson collection on railroads (dated 1949-1979; 0.47 cubic feet; 2 boxes) consists of 41 photographic prints as well as 61 assorted clippings and promotional items produced by railroad and train manufacturers. Some of the prints have captions identifying the type of train engine that is depicted and a portion of the prints are reproductions. The material in the collection represents a time in American history during which railroads were at the forefront of progress and expansion. Some of the railroads and railways featured include the L&N Railroad, the Western Pacific Railroad, the Canadian Pacific Railway, the Atlantic Coast Line, and Union Pacific Railroad.
