Stone, founder of the Disciples of Christ. At one time a minister, Moore later promoted atheism and free thought. He published the BLUE GRASS BLADE in Lexington, Ky., and in 1899 served five months in the federal prison in Columbus, Ohio for blasphemy and the advocacy of "free love." He was pardoned by President William McKinley. Moore wrote three books: THE RATIONAL VIEW proclaimed his opinions on religion and free thought; BEHIND THE BARS 31498 was a memoir of his imprisonment; and DOG FENNEL IN THE ORIENT described Moore's travels late in life in Europe, Egypt and the Holy Land. He had a sister, Mary Moore Brent. This is a collection of correspondence and other papers of the Moore and Brent families of central Kentucky. Most of the letters concern family members and were addressed to Mary Moore Brent. Some letters date from the era of the Civil War and describe living conditions and politics in Kentucky and Missouri. There are a few letters written by or to Charles Chilton Moore and some business and personal letters to other family members. Letter writers include James Lane Allen and the future President James A. Garfield. A copy of DOG FENNEL IN THE ORIENT is in the collection, as are some clippings concerning the discovery of the papers in 1961.Arrangement is primarily chronological, with miscellaneous materials arranged by subject at the end of the collection.Allen, James Lane, 1849-1925.Blaine, James Gillespie, 1830-1893.Brent, J.
