31.       UK Libraries Hosts Counterparts from Japan's Kyoto University
UK Libraries welcomed a delegation from Kyoto University to campus March 19 to March 24. Staff from Kyoto, one of Japan's largest universities, and UK librarians took part in a week of training and information exchange on the Lexington campus. During the international exchange, library staff from the two universities discussed conservation treatments for library collections; preservation management, including disaster planning and recovery; collection condition surveys; microfilming; and digitization.
32.       UK Cheerleaders Featured on WE tv's "Cheerleader U'
"Cheerleader U," a six-episode television series on WE tv, featured the national champion UK cheerleading squad. The series went behind the scenes as Coach Jomo Thompson and adviser T. Lynn Williamson selected this year's squad and began the quest for the next national championship. The show followed the squad from the grueling week of try outs, where even returning members have to try out, through camp, classes, practices, and games, all in preparation for Universal Cheerleading Association nationals in January.
33.        Student Awards and Achievements
Brandi Berryman, Architecture, had her award-winning door design selected as part of the exterior for the 2007 Home and Garden Television (HGTV) Dream Home, an annual sweepstakes presented by the cable channel that presents home and garden programming. The doors were originally designed for and won the first JELD-WEN Student Door Design Contest in 2006.
Chris DeLotell, Journalism and Telecommunications, placed seventh in the Personality/Profile Writing competition of the 2006-07 William Randolph Hearst Foundation's Journalism Awards Program.
Three UK chemical engineering students, two from the Lexington campus and one from the Paducah campus, won awards for their oral research paper presentations at the American Institute of Chemical Engineers (AIChE) Southern Regional Conference March 30-April 1 in Columbia, South Carolina. Second place awards of $400 each went to Peter Frailie for "Polymer-Silica Mixed Matrix Membranes for Solute Separations from Water;" and Matthew Borns for "Reverse-Selective Membrane Networks for the Purification of CO2 Gas Mixtures." James Tidwell, a student in the UK chemical engineering program in Paducah, won a third place award of $200 for his presentation, "The Synthesis of Uranium Doped Lithiated Nickel Oxide." There were a total of 26 presentations from various universities.
