Author. Robert Spencer Cotterill was born in Ewing, Ky. in 1884, received his AB degree from Kentucky Wesleyan, his MA from the University of Virginia and his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin. Included among his works are: "EARLY RAILROADING IN KENTUCKY", "HISTORY OF PIONEER KENTUCKY", "THE SOUTHERN INDIANS", "THE OLD SOUTH", and "A SHORT HISTORY OF THE AMERICAS".
This is a copy of the manuscript, "The History of Fleming County, the first one hundred years, 1780-1880" and accompanying correspondence. The bulk of this collection is a typescript of the unpublished work by Dr. Robert S. Cotterill, the original of which is in possession of relatives. The copy is marked with corrections and is missing sheets 217, 280, 324 and 325. Included with the typescript is correspondence related to the publishing of the history, conditions governing its printing, discussions of the maps that would be included in the book, changes that were suggested, and lists of those who would be interested in purchasing copies of the work. Also present are the maps compiled by Samuel M. Cassidy, donor of the material, that were to be included in Cotterill's book.
