             Biographical note 
             James Wakefield Burke lived for most of his professional life in Germany. Before leaving the United States, he wrote for Esquire magazine in the 1930s. From 1945-1946 he was a war correspondent in Berlin and later became the staff correspondent in Berlin for the Indianapolis News. Burke attended the University of Tennessee for his undergraduate degree, taking his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees at the University of Southern California and Chicago, respectively.
