Coach Don DeVoe's Postgame Comments
The following are Coach Don DeVoe's postgame comments after his team was defeated by Kentucky 92-67 at Rupp Arena:
Coach DeVoe: I thought the key, was their ability, as they started against LSU here, was to control the tempo and to make the big plays to win that game. That win against LSU allowed them to do that at Auburn, and win at a real tough place. Since then they've played really fine basketball.
What about the league race? Coach DeVoe: There's no doubt that Georgia and LSU have the depth. They're going to be the teams that are probably going to do well. I shouldn't leave out Alabama. Alabama has played quite well, recently. Alabama's a mighty impressive basketball team. As far as the SEC tournament is concerned, I think Georgia, LSU and Alabama have the most momentum.
Did you see anything positive in tonight's performance for your team?
Coach DeVoe: No. Kentucky just completely outplayed us. I don't want to elaborate on our shortcomings because it's obvious that we're not as good as we need to be at this point in the season. Kentucky made us look bad. Kentucky is a fine basketball team. They've had to come back from a losing record in December, where they fell below .500. I think they've done a very commendable job, but we didn't perform well.
Would you be disappointed if you didn't have to face [Kenny] Walker ever again?
Coach DeVoe: I think Walker is a good basketball player. They do a fine job like they do against all teams . . . against all teams they get the ball to him. They threw the ball up in the air and it's difficult to keep the ball from going to him. He knows where the basket is. It's great to have an
i
offensive player like that, and they've built their basketball team around that. I thought (Bret) Bearup had a fine game. I thought he did a magnificant job. I'm pleased to see him do well. (Roger) Harden played with a lot of confidence. I think this game probably will help Kentucky an awful lot. They're going to need a lot of help going to LSU on Saturday. LSU is a very, very fine team.
Coach, do you think Kentucky will get invited to the NCAA Tournament this March?
Coach DeVoe: I'd say if there are six to seven games over .500, then they'll get in. They've played a tough schedule. Nobody really played a more difficult December schedule than Kentucky. I think tonight's win certainly allowed that opportunity (NCAA bid); 64 teams really waters the tournament pretty good. Not that Kentucky is a weak team, but they're certainly a lot stronger team with maybe five or six wins over .500 than a lot of the most recently established Division I conferences, where somebody has 19 of 21 wins. I think Kentucky's in. . . I felt if we could have won tonight, then we would have had a pretty good chance. Kentucky will be in the NCAA. This win tonight assured them of that. The most they can have now is two more losses. Even at 16-12, 1 think Kentucky will get in because they played a very fine schedule in December. They had a great win over Kansas, and Kansas is going (NCAA). Kentucky's beaten a lot of tough teams: they won at Florida, at Auburn and played Alabama close on the road. Their losses have all been good losses; they haven't lost to a really weak team all season. I hope they get in. I think they deserve to get in. They've had some tough breaks this year, and they're certainly one of the top 64 teams in the country.
