FIVE YEARS AGO
"Some costly turnovers in the final minutes, and 19 turnovers during the game, allowed LSU to defeat Kentucky 80-78 in Birmingham in the finals of the SEC tournament. The Cats had defeated the Tigers just one week earlier for the regular season SEC crown. LSU led by three at the half but UK came back to take the lead. Then UK made crucial turnovers in the final two minutes when the teams were virtually trading baskets. DeWayne Scales was spectacular for LSU, hitting 13 of 19 shots and scoring 26 points, many coming down the stretch. Sam Bowie and Kyle Macy had great nights for UK. Macy fought an earlier-tournament illness to hit seven straight second half shots, nine of 12 for the game, and scored 20 points. Bowie hit nine of 13 shots and scored 20 points
while getting 12 rebounds. Dirk Minniefield hit five of six shots for 12 points.
*Despite 29 points from forward John Stroud, UK was able to down Ole Miss 70-67 and advanced to the SEC tourney finals. Ole Miss led by six points with 6 minutes into the 2nd half and trailed by only one with 2:18 left. Chuck Verderber hit the front end of a bonus situation and Dirk Minniefield and an ailing Kyle Macy both sank two foul shots to seal the win. Freshman Sam Bowie led UK with a career-high 27 points. Minniefield added 10 points.
*Led by Sam Bowie, who played the second half with a bandage on his leg after a first half injury, UK defeated Auburn 69-61 in the first round of the SEC tourney. UK took the lead at 6-4 and never trailed, although they could never blow the Tigers out. Bowie scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds.
Fred Cowan scored 11 points and Kyle Macy 10.
*Kentucky was bested by Auburn in the SEC wrestling tournament. Auburn finished with 81 V points, Kentucky second with 75. However, UK's Ricky Dellagatta was voted the SEC's Outstanding Wrestler by the coaches.
TEN YEARS AGO
*Tennessee's Bernard King was chosen the SEC's outstanding freshman. Rick Robey and Jack Givens of UK were named to the first team.
*Mike Phillips came off the bench to score 26 points and lead UK to 118-80 win over Mississippi State in the season finale at Starkville. Combined with Auburn's 76-60 upset of Alabama, the win enabled UK to tie the Tide for the SEC championship. It was UK's 29th title. It also enabled UK to qualify  as  the  SEC's  number one

Kentucky finished the regular season with a 22-4 record. Phillips hit 11 of 13 shots in the finale and Kevin Grevey led all UK scorers with 30 points.
*UK was rated fourth in the final UPI ratings and sixth in the final AP ratings. Unbeaten Indiana heads both polls.
*The UK baseball team opened its season splitting a doubleheader with Louisville. UK won the opener 7-0 and bowed in the second game 1-0 after 13 innings. Ed McCaw blanked Louisville for five innings in the first game before being relieved. Michael Howard held Louisville hitless for seven innings in the nightcap before being relieved.
FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
*UK ended the regular season 25-1 by downing Tennessee 86-69. Dan Issel and Tom Parker each scored 21 points.
'UK's Tom Parker was named Sophomore-of-the-Year by SEC coaches. Stan Key was on the second team.
*With UCLA being upset by Southern Cal, Kentucky finished the season atop the rankings in the final AP and UPI polls. It was the sixth time UK finished first in the AP and fourth in UPI.
*After trailing 53-48 at the half, Kentucky went a zone defense and
rallied to defeat Notre Dame 109-99 in the NCAA Mideast Regional in Columbus, Ohio. In foul trouble, UK trailed the entire first half and finally took the lead with 18:07 to go behind a 1-3-1 trapping defense. UK outscored the Irish 21-12 in the final five minutes. Dan Issel scored 44 points, Mike Pratt 14, Terry Mills 13, Tom Parker 12 and Jim Dinwiddie 11. All-American Austin Carr scored 52 points for Notre Dame.
*Chattanooga handed the UK baseball team a 2-1 loss in their opener. . TK sophomore Larry Bannon yielded but seven hits and Derek Bryant had two hits for UK.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
*UK captain Billy Evans will not be eligible for the NCAA play. NCAA rules state a player can take as long as he wants to graduate and still be eligible. A five-year student with a straight A average, Evans holds a college degree. Evans is in only his third year of basketball, but went along with the regular course of study rather than spread his classes out.
*San Francisco, led by Bill Russell, finished number one in the AP and UPI polls with a 23-1 record. Kentucky was second with 22-2 record.
?Before 9,000 partisan basketball fans at Northwestern's McGaw Memorial Hall, Marquette upset Kentucky 79-71 in the opening round of the Midwest Regional. The game was tied 16 times and the lead changed hands 18 times in the first 33 minutes, before Coach Ed Nagle's team pulled out the victory. Kentucky was minus three starters it opened the year with and lost two more by personal fouls. Pacing UK was Gayle Rose with 20 points. Bob Burrow tallied 19 and John Brewer 16.
