             The Federal Writers' Project manuscript (dated 1939; 0.45 cubic feet; 1 box) comprises a typescript of 
                 Kentucky: A Guide to the Bluegrass  with accompanying photographs documenting Kentucky's geography, agriculture, architecture, churches, newspapers, archaeology, folklore and history. The Federal Writers' Project was started by the Works Progress Administration as part of their work on an American Guide Series. The typescript is separated by: general background, cities and towns and highways and byways. Included is the appendices and index, which details church histories, Native American presence, museums and other information concerning Kentucky.

             Biographical note 
             The Works Progress Administration founded the Federal Writers' Project in 1935 to provide jobs in the United States during the Great Depression. It was directed by Henry G. Alsberg from 1935 to 1939. The WPA put emphasis on creating an American Guide Series, to demonstrate important aspects of each state. The Federal Writers' Project ended in 1943.
