Your communication of March 17th is received. It is my opin—
ion that there is no recent additional cause for complaint7such as
has been made to youjin regard to the presence of male stuaents in
and around the gymnasium during the girls' hours. I do not think
the boys have interfered within the past few days or weeks more
than at any time since the establishment of the book store ano

impossible for me to keep boys out when I cannot keep doors lockea
However, I Shall keep closer watch during the practice of the

promptly.

of the Board of Trustees regarding eligibility of students on teams
for playing match games and.the interpretations of these regulations

If this be so it in both unjust and unkind. Such utterances are salons

rThe Executive Committee proposed to leave the interpretation of the
rules to me. I declined the responsibility and insisted that the Execu-
tive Committee interpret them. This they did. The record determines
the eliginility under the limitations set forth in the interpretation
of the Committee. I cannot assume to say that 8 and 2 rake 5 as you

3 We the undersigned students of the State College, realizing ”ii 3,;
I that the present‘method of providing funds for the support of athletics ~, 1
(whether in or out—door) is unsatisfactory, in that the amount raised I
is entirely inadequate and the burden of it falls upon a very few, 1
I respectfully ask that you so amend the regulation pertaining to g
I "Gymnasium Wee" that no matriculate in the College be exempt from ’
I the payment of same, and that the fund thus constituted he devoted .
I exclusively to Athletics — three~fifths being applied to the support
I of the Gymnasium and two—fifths being turned ever to the Athletic F
I Association for the support of Out-Door Athletics. , 2
Under such a ruling, three ($3.00) dollars of the five ($5.00) I ;
dollar fee collected would go to suppert the Gymnasium and two ($2.00) I
dollars to out—door athletics. . I
' ' If this rule had been in effect this year the College would have :
realized from $300.00 to fi500.00 more ror tfih Gymnasium than was 4

Pres't James K. Patterson,
Lexington, Ky.
My dear President:-

Your letter of the 23rd at hand. It was forwarded to me from
Louisville; hence my delay in answering.

The resolution in regard to the dances by the students in the
gymnasium was passed by the Board for the purpose of being enforced, and
the faculty ought to enforce it, and, if necessary to that end, suspend
the dances altogether. I assume that you have addressed the letter I
received to each of the'board, and that you will be guided by a majority
opinion. If you have not adopted this course, I suggest that you do.

Of course, we ought not to act tyranically, or with unreason-
able harshness in the matter,‘but it is time that the students should
understand that the orders of the Woard are to be obeyed. It might not
be a bad idea to read the resolution again to the students at chapel, and
inform them that, unless it is obeyed, the dances thereafter will be perm-
anently discontinued. This will insure that they have not been taken by
surprise, and that their disobedience thereafter is wilful.

With kindest regards, I am,

Very truly your friend,
will? if“ MM ,

President James K. Patterson,
Lexington, Ky.
Dear Sir:-

I received your letter several days since, enclosing
order made by the Board of Trustees, in regard to dances in the
Gymnaseum Building. I am decidedly of the opinion that unless
the order of the Trustees be adhered to, that the dances should
be discontinued. or course you being directly connected with the
institution, your judgment in the matter is far better than that
of any member of! the Board, and I would feel very much inclined
to favor that which you think best, but it seems to me, without
having given the matter much thought, that if the young ladies and
young gentlemen of the City of Lexington, and the adjoining country,
are allowed to attend these dances ZZ,the Gymnaseun would soon
be regarded as a free dancing hall, and our girls at the college
would perhaps form the acquaintance of young men, who would not be
the kind of society that their parents would approve of. I had
hoped to come to Lexington on this trip, but I have some pressing
business which calls me home immediately after our adjournment, so
I will have to defer my visit until the next time I come to Frank—
fort. I hope my daughter and niece are getting along nicely.

Each of them report that they are delighted with Patterson Hall,
and the school.
I Very truly yours,
A» /\
