I 12 Thirty-ninth Amtual Report
or May. In the case of Kentucky poultry, there is a decided
movement in April and May. The market usually averages
‘ strong at this period. Analysis of statistics of Kentucky’s
· V ¤ poultry industry indicates that receipts from poultry form a
larger proportion of gross farm receipts in areas of compara-
’   i tively low farm income than in areas having larger incomes;
p j also that small farms tend to have larger flocks in proportion
‘ ¥ to their size than do large farms. Eighty-nine percent of the
farms in Kentucky reported chickens in 1920. 'l‘he average V
.· number of chickens per farm and the average value of pro-
_ , duct per farm in Kentucky are lower than the average of the
. . country. Kentucky showed a smaller number of eggs, but a
i larger number of chickens raised in 1919 per chicken on farms,
i - { January 1, 1920, than the averages for the United States.
_ Farm Income Studies. Figures on incomes for several
_` ° years have been brought together and are presented in Table 1,
1 g which shows the net earnings of successful farmers in various
V f W sections of Kentucky contrasted with those of average farmers
p f in tl1e same localities. The fact has been brought out in in-
_ A vestigations in costs and returns from various farm products 1
-"_' . that control of the cost_of production is one of the major
._ ii causes of variations in net earnings of farmers. i
