Carter was born in Charlottesville, Va, but left that state as an infant when his parents emigrated to Woodford county, Ky. in 1809. He studied medicine with Dr. Daniel Drake in Cincinnati from 1827-1832, and in 1832 graduated from the Ohio Medical College. He married Margaret T. Carlyle that year, and began practicing medicine in Woodford County. He was active in the treatment of victims of the cholera epidemic of 1832-1833.These eleven ledgers contain the treatment records of the patients of both Dr. Carter and the doctor who took over his practice after his death. The ledgers contain the names of patients, along with the reasons, the dates and the costs of their treatment. Most volumes contain alphabetical name indexes, and some include abbreviated birth and death information. Each volume covers a one to three year time span, and together, the ledgers cover the period from 1859 to 1891. The papers document the nature and extent of Dr. Carter's practice in particular, and are useful as well, for the information they give on the practice of medicine in general, in 19th-century Kentucky.Arrangement is roughly chronological.Carter, Joseph Coleman, 1808-1876.Physicians--Kentucky--Woodford County.Medicine--Practice--Kentucky.Joseph Coleman Carter papers, 1859-1891
