*The Kentucky Bat Cats split a doubleheader with the Florida Gators at Shively Sports Center on the UK campus. Florida won the first game 11-4, jumping out to a 7-4 lead and then scoring four more runs in the ninth to get the win. In the second game. Jay Ray pitched an outstanding game, allowing just eight hits, fanning five and walking only one in UK's 5-0 win. UK scored four times in the fourth on the strength of a Scott Knox home run and several Gator miscues.
*Sophomore Kevin Gothard hit a grand slam homer in the bottom of the 14th inning to give the Wildcats a 7-3 marathon win over visiting New York Tech. The win raised UK's record to 20-7 overall for the year.
?The University of Indiana baseball team broke a 17-game nonconference winning streak, besting the 'Cats at Shively Sports
Center. Paul Kilgus took the loss even though he did not allow an earned run in eight innings pitched.
Five Years Ago
*Led by sophomore tailback John Gay's 107 yards, the Blue team rushed for 257 yards en rout to a 24-14 win in the UK football team's annual Blue-White game at Commonwealth Stadium. Gay was just one of seven backs who gained 25 yards or more in the game. Doug Martin, who quarterbacked the Blue squad, completed 12 of 20 passes and had an interception. The White's Randy Jenkins connected on 10 of 20 attempts through the air.
"Kentucky once again led the SEC in recruiting. The 'Cats signed three blue-chippers: Roger Harden of Valparaiso, Ind., Kenny Walker of Roberta, Ga., and Todd May of Virgie, Ky.

*Leah Little announced that Sharon Jackson of Syracuse, NY., Collen Lafferty of Wilmington, Del., Sally Long of Louisville and Penny Booher of Dayton, Ohio had signed letters of intent to compete as gymnasts for UK.
*Jamie Plummer of Englewood, Ohio became the only women's golf signee of the season.
?Kentucky basketball recruit Todd May was honored as the Kentucky high school Mr. Basketball.
*The Lady Kat basketball staff announced that Leslie Nichols of Lexington and Karen Mosley of Toledo, Ohio would play basketball for UK in 1982.

*Kentucky relief ace Jeff Keener came out of the bullpen to register wins in both games of Saturday's twinbill as UK gained ground in the Eastern Division by defeated Florida twice. The Gators did come back to win Sunday's game. In the first game, Jim Leopold's grand slam homer sparked UK to an 8-4 win. Kenner allowed no hits and fanned five in 2% innings. In the nightcap, Mike Botkin led off the final inning with a game-winning home run, his second longball of the game. Greg Ryle added a solo shot for Kentucky. Kenner worked the final inning, allowing one hit.
*With the national signing date approaching soon, Kentucky is one of the several schools suddenly interested in Simon Kenton basketball star Troy McKinley. The 6-6 McKinley was outstanding in this year's state tournament and quickly schools such as UK, Louisville and Western became interested. Kentucky is also expected to ink Jasper, Ind., guard Mike Ballenger, who has signed an SEC letter of intent with the 'Cats.

*The Kentucky-led USA team bombed the Russians 107-82 to win the World Invitational Tournament at Rupp Arena. The USA team had won earlier victories over Cuba and Yugoslavia at other sites. The game in Lexington wrapped up the tournament and coach Joe Hall and his players accepted the first championship trophy in the World Invitational.
*The UK baseball team won three games. The first was a 12-8 come-from-behind win over Morehead. The 'Cats rallied back from a 4-0 deficit in that contest. Later in the week Kentucky swept a pair from Louisville, 8-4 and 14-13.
?Kentucky's football team ended spring drills with its annual Blue-White game. The Blue team, coached by Courier-Journal columnist Earl Cox, downed the White team 20-0. The Whites were led by Herald-Leader columnist D.G. Fitzmaurice.
Ten Years Ago
?Senior guard Larry Johnson was the winner at the annual awards banquet for the Kentucky basketball team. Johnson won the 110 Percent Award, the Outstanding Senior Award, the Outstanding Defensive Player Award, the Most Assists Award, the Senior Appreciation Award and the UPI Player of the Year award in Kentucky. Jack Givens was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player and also received the Joe B. Hall Award for the best free throw shooter. Rick Robey won the A.B. Chandler Trophy, Merion Haskins the K-Men's Scholastic Award and Tim Stephens the Freshman Leadership Award. Over 1,000 people attended the banquet, which also included a vote of confidence for Hall from UK president Dr. Otis Singletary. Recent rumors had Hall's job in jeapardy, but Singletary gave the UK coach a strong vote of support.
?Football coach Fran Curci has completed his football staff as Kentucky comes off a year in which it won the Peach Bowl. The final addition was line coach Jim Nablack, who was the freshmen coach at Florida lasta year. He replaced Jon Mirilovich, who left for North Carolina State. Other new additions this year are Bill Glaser, Larry Kirksey and Georee Catavolos.

?Kentucky could manage but three hits all afternoon against a pair of Tennessee pitchers as the 'Cats were downed 12-1 and 7-0 by their arch-rivals. UK pitchers Phil Grawemeyer and Jim Host were both victims of erratic fielding and no offensive output.
?Paced by a 14-point output by Ray Blas-ingame and two distance wins by Jasper Creech, the UK track team edged a stubborn Sewanee crew, 66Vi to 64lA at Stoll field. UK's Lou Michaels also set the UK record in the shot put. His toss of 47' 10" bettered his own previous best.
?Billy Ray Lickert, the 6-3 Lafayette star who led his team to the state title and was named the state's Mr. Basketball and a prep Ail-American, signed a grant to play at Kentucky. He averaged 24.4 points a game and scored 106 points in state tourney play. He was an all-state selection as a center during his junior year, but switched to guard last season.
?The Kentucky high school basketball state tournament will return to Memorial Coliseum next March after being held at the State Fairgrounds in 1957. Several reasons were given for the move: students got the worst seats at the Fairgrounds, restrooms were sometimes locked, terrible downtown traffic, high hotel prices and students had to pay 20 cents for a half-pint of milk at downtown restaurants.

?Kentucky center Bob Burrow scored 12 points but his East team lost to the West club 74-62 in the East-West All-Star game in Kansas City. San Francisco's Bill Russell scored 18 points for the winners. Tommy Heinson led the East with 15.
?Georgia Teacher's College spoiled UK's baseball opener with an 8-5 win. Jack Marston, Bill Willard and Jim Morris each had two hits for UK. Charlie Wilde went the distance and took the loss for the 'Cats.
