Welcome . . .
We wish to take this opportunity to extend a most cordial and hearty welcome to our many Kentucky friends on the occasion of this sixth annual University of Kentucky Invitational Basketball Tournament. We also wish to welcome the outstanding teams from Ohio State University, Oklahoma State University, and the University of West Virginia. To the members of the teams, to their coaches, and to their followers, we give a real Blue Grass welcome.
We hope that all visitors to the campus for this event will enjoy the stay here in Lexington. May we bear in mind throughout the tournament that this Memorial Coliseum is dedicated to the mem-cry of Kentucky's sons who gave their lives for their country and may we conduct ourselves in such a manner that we shall be worthy of the sacrifice made by these young men.
Frank G. Dickey, President University of Kentucky
A tall, silver-haired administrator, who was a three-sport star in his collegiate days at Illinois and Director of Athletics for the University of Kentucky since 1938, serves in the capacity of Tournament Manager of the U.K. Invitational. He is Bernie A. Shively, a capable supervisor known familiarly to thousands of athletes, coaches, officials and fans as "Shive." During his college career at Illinois in the late twenties, he was an All-America guard on the same grid team made famous by Red Grange. "Shive" also laid claim to the Big 10 heavyweight wrestling title and annexed letters in track. During his tenure at Kentucky, he has held the posts of football line coach, head of the Physical Education Department, track coach, baseball coach and head football coach in addition to supervising the steady growth of one of the nation's top athletic programs in the capacity of Director of Athletics. The Kentucky sports chief also is a member of the NCAA Basketball Tournament Committee and for the past five years has been president of the SEC Coaches and Athletic Directors Association.

BERNIE A. SHIVELY Tournament Manager
5 Sixth Annual
UK INVITATIONAL TOURNAMENT
In the short span of five years, University of Kentuckya school already internationally respected in basketball circleshas captured the imagination of the cage world beyond the wide limits of its own fabulous success with a high-calibre ho iday festival known as the U.K. Invitational
Tournament. Tournaments, especially the Christmas holidays variety, are neither new nor unique, but the UKIT admittedly stands in a class by itself in the most important and commendable respects.
The U.K. Invitational was inaugurated in 1953 with the thought of furthering a trend toward returning big-time basketball to college-controlled arenas and it has done that in convincing fashion. Under the management of Kentucky Athletic Director Bernie Shively, outstanding teams have been selected from various sections of the country to join with the host Wildcats in a field of truly national scope. The constantly-increasing high calibre of the participating teams and the resulting fine brand of competition has led to great public patronage and important national prestige has been attached to the tournament.
Typical of the type of fields competing in the UKIT was last year's lineup of North Carolina's defending NCAA champions, West Virginia's "Cinderella Kids," Big Ten powerhouse Minnesota and the eventual national champion Wildcats. Near perfection was added by the fact that all four clubs entered tournament play ranked among the top ten powers in the wire service polls and all but Kentucky was undefeated. West Virginia supplied additional color to the prestige-packed festival by snapping North Carolina's 37-game winning streak to take the title and vault into first place in the polls, a position they never relinquished.
Previous participants in the tournament have been LaSalle, Utah, Dayton (two appearances each), Minnesota, Illinois, UCLA, Southern California, Duke, and Southern Methodist.
Last year's UKIT clicked the turnstiles in outstanding fashion as an attendance of 20,956 made possible a national record-sized payoff of $11,751.38 to each of the four participating teams. According to tournament policy, competing teams share equally in the net proceeds and the fact that these shares generally amount to around $10,000 has stamped the UKIT as the nation's most lucrative tournament a factor that makes selection of desirable teams easier.
Pairings for the 1958 renewal of the UKIT promise no letdown in the national prestige that has become attached to the cage festival. West Virginia is scheduled to defend its 1957 tourney crown first against the Cowboys of Oklahoma State while the host Kentuckians, winners of the championship three out of five times, take on Big 10 powerhouse Ohio State.
With the Mountaineers and Wildcats slotted in opposite brackets, a potential second night meeting would offer an unprecedented showdown battle between the regular season national champion of the polls (West Virginia) and the national chamDion by NCAA Tournament eliminations (Kentucky). While there's no disputing that such a matchbelieved unique in advance of season-end tournament playis what the public will be hoping for, both clubs should have their hands full in trying to advance to the championship game.

 OKLAHOMA STATE Cowboys
The Cowboys of Coach Hank Iba, better known to Kentucky tans as the Aggies who taced the Wildcats twice in national tournament play, make their debut in the UKIT labeled as a teared cage power despite a lack of desirable experience. In his silver anniversary season at Oklahoma State, Iba can call on only one regular from last season's NCAA quarter finalists, but 6-8 pivotman Arlen Clark makes up for a lot of missing experience. The cagey mentor also boasts a good pool of holdovers of less spectacular brand and some highly promising sophs who should make OSU hard to handle by any opponent. Oklahoma State has a reputation for toughness in tournament play stemming from two NCAA championships and 14 Missouri Valley titles in 23 years as a member of that conference. Coach Iba's personal record, one of the finest in the sport, includes 619 collegiate triumphs.

OUTLOOKThe Cowboys, better known to Kentucky fans as the Aggies who faced the Wildcats twice in national tournament play, are singing the blues over a shortage of experience pointed up by the loss to pro baseball of floor leader Jerry Adair. However, cagey Hank Iba can still count on 6-8 pivotman Arlen Clark, leading scorer last year with a 1 7.3 average, and a good pool of holdovers and sophs with adequate height. Competed as independent in '58 and got to quarter finals of NCAA before Kansas State stopped mem. Start play in Big Eight this year.

OHIO STATE Buckeyes
Typical of the darkhorse potential of any season's edition of Buckeyes, Ohio State almost surprised Kentucky's Wildcats in a regular season game last year and can be counted on to throw a scare into any opponent taking them lightly. Under the direction of a new head coach, youthful Fred Taylor, the Buckeyes make their debut in the UKIT with a record of only one win in three starts, but that came in their last game amid indications they may have found scoring punch to go with aggressive playmaking. Offensively, Ohio State presents a colorful combination of fast breaking and patterned front court maneuvering. Key man in the lineup that faces the Wildcats in the UKIT opening round will be veteran 6-6 center Larry Huston, an excellent hook and tip in artist. Coach Taylor, at 34, has never had previous head coaching experience, but learned well as freshman coach of the Buckeyes since 1953.

OUTLOOK The Mountaineers handed Kentucky a home floor setback and halted North Carolina's 37-game win streak to cop the UKIT last December and vault into top national ranking, a position never relinquished as they posted a 26-2 mark for regular season championship honors. Upset in opening round of NCAA tourney by Manhattan, WVU has vowed to come back this year tougher than ever. Although the current campaign was supposed to be a rebuilding year for Baron Adolph Rupp, the nation's winningest cage mentor has his Kentucky charges off and running at another UKIT title as a stepping stone to new national honors. Surprisingly undefeated going into tournament play, the defending national champs will pit a youth-dominated lineup against more experienced fives. Only All-America candidate Johnny Cox, sensational hook shot artist and rebounding demon, returns from the starting combo of last season. Taking up the slack in support of Cox are junior center Don Mills, junior college transfer Sid Cohen and a pair of sophsBill Lickert and Dick Parsons. If the Ruppmen can continue their drive out of an underdog role, they should be hard to stop from picking off a fourth UKIT title and an unprecedented fifth NCAA trophy. Baron Rupp and his Wildcats are a feared combination any year, but rate exceptionally tough in blue-chip tournament play.

25 Only a little more than a quarter century ago, the University of Kentucky provided its basketball team with its second homea magnificent new Alumni Gymnasium seating 2,800 spectators.
A great many persons freely suggested that the arena would prove to be a "white elephant" which would never be crowded to anywhere near capacity by the sport that then was considered little more than an innocuous winter-months' pastime.
But the hardwood game blitzed the nation and Kentucky teams forged to the national forefront in such a crowd-pleasing manner that the "huge" hall soon could not begin to accommodate the large number of fans seeking to whet their newfound interest. In fact, the situation soon developed to the point where only the student body and faculty were admitted and for several years about all that Kentuckians at large knew of their state university's famed cage teams consisted of information gleaned from the press and radio.
In 1941, when Dr. H. L Donovan became president of the University, one of his first
recommendatiors was for a building "that will properly take care of our athletics, our health service, physical education, and recrea
