Major General Preston Brown was born on January 2, 1872 in Lexington, Kentucky into a family with many important figures in Kentucky history. His father, John Mason Brown, was a Colonel in the Union Army and one of the founders of The Filson Club in Louisville, Kentucky. Preston Brown's mother, Mary Owen Preston, was the daughter of Confederate General William C. Preston and Margaret Howard Wickliffe. Preston Brown's grandfather, Mason Brown, served as Kentucky Secretary of State, and his great-grandfather, John Brown, was the first United States Senator from the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
Preston Brown graduated from Yale in 1892 and attended law school at the University of Virginia. In 1894, he enlisted in the Army as a private. Preston Brown served during the Spanish American War, the Philippine American War, and World War I. By 1925, Preston Brown had advanced to the rank of Major General and retired in 1934 after forty years of service. He was active in genealogical research and a member of the Historical Society of Cincinnati until his death in 1948.
