The Dean of Men and the Dean of Women
The Dean of Men and the Dean of Women assist students with
their problems and aid them in their adjustment to college life.
Their offices serve as a general clearing house for matters pertain-
ing to the welfare of all students. The Dean of Men and the Dean
of Women seek at all times to help each student gain his maximum
academic and personal development through normal, interesting,
and important activities.
University Personnel Service
The University Personnel Office is under the supervision of a
director, who has an advisory committee consisting of the Deans of
the various colleges, the Deans of men and women, and the Assis-
tant Registrar. The office carries on its functions through a test
supervisor, a mental hygienist, and academic advisors, all of whom
are directly responsible to the Director.
Advisors. Every freshman, regardless of College, is assigned
to an academic advisor by the University Personnel Office. The
assignment is made on the basis of personal interviews, classifica-
` tion test scores, and college interests. The academic advisor must
be consulted by the student prior to assignment to classes. The
advisor is of service to the student in the following ways: making
or changing a class schedule, conducting for one quarter an orien-
tation class, supplying information concerning University life, voca-
tions, and personal problems.
Psychological Tests. All placement and classification tests ad-
ministered to new students are given under the supervision of the
University Personnel Office. For the year 1945-46, the tests given
were as follows: The Kentucky General Scholastic Ability Test,
The Kentucky English Test, The Kentucky Mathematics Test, and
The Cooperative American History Test, Revised Series. The tests
are used primarily as an aid in determining the student’s college,
the particular courses or sections, the total academic load, and the
vocational objective.
In addition, every student is given an opportunity to take apti-
tude and interest tests. 'l`hese special tests, however, are not re-
quired for entering students.
Mental Hygiene. In cooperation with the Department of Pub-
Lic Health and Hygiene, a mental hygiene service is maintained.
Any student who wishes may consult the mental hygienist at the
University Health Service. Certain students are advised to avail
themselves of this service.
