E Students interested in the Topical Field will be referred by the
"   Dean to the chairman of the committee in charge and this com-
[ mittee will aid the student in making out his course schedule for
8   the particular topic.
E i To pursue a topical field, the student must have earned a mini-
- mum academic standing of 1.5 during the freshman and sophomore
1 ~ years, and must have the approval of the Committee on Topical
Fields which will require as a rule completion of the lower division
S group requirements as prerequisites. _
I Tutorial Work and Comprehensive Examinations
J Students majoring in the departments of Anatomy and Physi-
a ology, Ancient Languages, Art, Botany, Economics, Geology, Ger-
V man, Journalism, Mathematics and Astronomy, Music, Philosophy,
Physical Education, Physics, Political Science, Romance Languages,
S 1 Social Work, Sociology, and Zoology will be required to schedule
3 tutorial or seminar courses as specified by their major departments
é and to take final comprehensive examinations covering their major
work. Passing the comprehensive examinations is a prerequisite
: for graduation for major students in these departments. If a stu-
’ dent fails to graduate because of failure in this examination, he
may be given another examination when his major department is
’ r satisfied that he has made sufficient additional preparation.
‘ A. B. or B. S. with Department Honors
· The degree of A. B. or B. S. with Honors in the student's major
* p subject will be conferred upon the student who, in addition to having
, ` completed the requirements for the degree, shall have (1) attained
‘ high standing in his major subject; (2) passed with distinction a
. thorough, comprehensive examination in his major subject; (3) been
recommended for the said degree by the faculty of the department
[ in which his major.work was done. Students majoring in those
' departments that require the final comprehensive examination are
1 automatically candidates for department honors.
Independent Work Courses
L A junior or senior, if his particular excellence in the department 4
i warrants it, may with the annroval of his major professor and dean,
register for an independentwork course in his major subject. Such
a course is characterized by special assignments for study, weekly
or bi-weekly conferences, reports and quarter papers of some sus-
· tained effort. Credit for such courses may be granted to under-
graduates to an amount of not more than 18 quarter hours. At the
end of the quarter a written report of the work in such a course, or
a paper representing part of the work must be read before the staff _
of the department. A copy of this paper must be filed in the office of
the head of the department concerned.
