Biography / History
The First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Kentucky, was founded in 1784.
Scope and Content
These are the records of the First Presbyterian Church, Lexington, Ky., 1796 to 1976. Included in the collection are church directories correspondence, session minutes, architectural drawings, photographs, newspaper clippings and congregational meeting minutes. Many of the materials are church business records which include church contracts, deeds and receipts. Also present are letters of church membership and dismission, proceedings of a church trial of a Mrs. Logan in 1838 for improper language, letters of W. F. V. Bartlett (pastor of the church, ca. 1899), diaries of Robert W. Miles (church pastor) concerning church events, 1933-1951 and material concerning the Henry Clay law office controversy of 1967-1969, in which the First Presbyterian Church attempted unsuccessfully to remove this office from its original site.
