Scope and Contents note The African American photographs include tintypes, albumen cartes de visite, lantern slides, gaslight developing out papers, albumen and silver gelatin print cabinet cards, mounted and unmounted silver gelatin prints, and halftones. The photographs are primarily portraits but also include materials pertaining to the clergy, churches, the YMCA, and family life. History The Collection on African Americans in Kentucky are photographs that have been brought together in an artificial collection based on subject matter and due to the small nature of the individual collections. Arrangement note This collection is arranged into 14 series based on original provenance. The contents of the series are arranged chronologically by photographic format. Conditions Governing Use note The physical rights to the materials in this collection are held by the University of Kentucky Special Collections.
