I t is a lamentable fact t hat m ore money is being expended for the education of foreign-born children in the l arge cities of our country than for the education of the A n g l o - S a x o n s i n the Southern mountains. W h i c h is w orth m ore to this nation, the v irile a nd sturdy stock of t he highlands   uncontaminated by the vices and attractions of c ivilization i n our greater cities   or the thousands of f oreigners t hat p our into our country monthly by way of N ew Y o r k h arbor ? T o q uote President T h i r k i e l d a gain : " T h e mountain p eople are of fine mental capacity. A man of affairs and a d eep s tudent of character once said of them : 'They n eed o nly an introduction to c ivilization t o prove themselves equal to any men in the w orld. I r egard them as t he finest rough material in the w orld, a nd one of them m odeled i nto available s hape is worth to the w orld a d ozen o rdinary people.' A n d yet today hundreds of t housands of these p atriotic Americans are more ignorant a nd more destitute of the opportunities w hich g o w ith e ducation than any other body of A n g l o - S a x o n p eople o n t he face of the earth."
