There were no decorations in the Odeon this morning besides the stars
and stripes, but of these there was a profusion. SR

All delegates to the National Convention of the Union Labor party, ‘
were provided with miniature flags, which were worn in the button—holes :
of their coats.

There was a considerable delay in getting the delegates together, and

. it was One o’clock when T.M Gruelli, of Indianapolis, called the conven—
tion to order. Even then not more than 200 delegates had put in an apa
pearance.

Col. D.F. Norton of Chicago, editor of the Greenback organ, was made
permanent chairman. He said they had me+ together for the purpose of
driving the first nail into the coffins of the two old parties.

General discontent existed, and the great army of tramps was growing
larger every year. Farmers were overwhelmed with debt, and nothing but
bankruptory and the loss of their homes stare them in the face.

Workingmen, being thrOWn out of employment, were forced to resort to
strikes and in many cases to open violence. The Union Labor people-start
on its career a new party. He adjured all to lay aside personal ambi—
tions and divergent ideas, and join in bringing relief to the people of
the United States.

Hilliard, of Kentucky, created a commotion by introducing a resolution
requesting Dr. McGlynn to be present at the afternoon session, a storm ,
of objections gathering immediately, and great disorder prevailed.
Hilliard protested against gag law, and the fiasco ended by the delegates.
Making a break for the open air.

_ Chamber of Commerce.
Important meeting last Night at the Courthouse.
(gmoposition made to the body for a new manufactory.
A good attendance Was had last night at the meeting of the Chamber of Commerce,
Ww—J/ ' ' /
The direct business of the chamber was to consider the proposition made byI/L*
Wheel Company to establish their yénufactory here, During the course of the
meeting it was discovered that the Standard wheel Company had paid the Wheel _
Manufactory that formerly did business here $10,000 to shut down for two
years. The STandard Oil Company is the principal/Stockholder in the Standard
Wheel Company; A sample of the Wheel which it is proposes to manufacture here
was on exhibition at the Chamber . Its advantages are p tent to anyone at all
intelligent in mechanics. It is evidently an improvemenzkver the Sarvin wheel,
/VQpr> which Was the one manufactured here, or ovenanything that is known to our experts
~V0II/§:;:%’)Mro Dougherty, of the Wheel Factoryywas introduced last night to the
.lufit; \, and in the course of his remarks Said that a company here might manufacture
igfl1 the wheel upon a royalty. He stated that the financial embarrassment under
‘ whibh they had labored when first here had been entirely removed, and that
they had received large orders, and were entertaining a proposition to furnish
one—half of their oudpujto one establishment. Mr. Winston then explained to
him that the Chamber ha no power to contract with him, but that the city was
offering inducements for manufactories to come here, and he wanted to know if
the city could probably do anything which supplemented by the efforts of individuals
would 3e liable to induce his plant to come here. Mr. Winston argued the
facilities that lexington possessed for getting the finest of raw mate ial for
making these wheels and the advantages she had for shipping. Upon motion
of Mr. Therelkeld, a special committee was appointed to act in conjunction with
the regular committee of manufactures, to visit the board of this company at
Cincinnati for conference regarding the moving of their plant to t is city. The
special committee consists of Messrs. J. E. Keller,E.S. DcLong, J.R. Couch,
W.S. Houlihan, W.S. Bush and Dr. Robinson, the last gentlEman having under a
suspenSion of the rules been voted a member of the Chamber last night. On
motion Dr. Morton, Mr. Harry Groom was also upon a suspension of the rules
last night/elected a member of the Chamber of Commerce. Adjourned.
