Big Price For Convict Labor
Frankfort, April 6.

The State Prison Commission let a contract to the Tennessee Shoe
Manufacturinv Company of Memphis, for the labor of 150 convicts. The
price paid, E5 cents a day for each man, is the highest that was ever
paid for convict labor in this State, and abrOgates an old contract
with the Leonard Jones Cempany of Vddyville, under which the State was
receiving 35 cents a day per hand.

Looks Like A Strike .
Miners of Southern and Western Kentucky may go out.
Louisville March 27.
It looks now as if the miners of Western and Southern Kentucky would
go out on a strike. After a weeks Conference, early in the month, the
miners and operators were unable to get tOgether. They have been in ,
session now for two days more, and are still far apart, with neither
side willing to make any Concessions. President John D. Wood, of the
United Mine Workers, said today,"We are where we were before. We in— .
sist on our present position“.
The operators are as little inclined to make concessions as the
miners are. The Miners are holding out for an Sahour day, and want
$2.10, or 80 cents a ton, to take effect April 1. The operators want
to pay $1.82 a day, or 75 cents a ton, with ten hours constituting a
day.
This is the same as last year, and is a Concession from the criminal
offer made by the operators this year, which was $1.64 a day, or 6ޤ
cents a ton, ten hours to constitute a day.

Barbers Union

Another Attempt to be made to make one Tffective.

The barbers are anxious to form a real union in Lexington. At least
some of them are.

Several attempts have been made to do this of late, but for some
reason they have failed.

, , 1 sen} . .

Not many months ago the barbers around a paper and had it sign»
ed, agreeing that all should close at 8 o'clock at night and at noon
on Sunday. It is claimed that one or two local shops are violating this
agreement and an effort will be made to modify it.

If a union is formed it is believed all such matters can be better
regulated and there are some of the shop propriators, however, who are
said to be opposed to a union.

It is not believed that these will fight such action, but when call:
ed upon will decline to join it. If enought members can be secured a
union will be formed and made a part of the National Organization.

A barber speaking to the Leader on the subject last night said:
"There are in the neighborhood of seventy-five or a humdred barbers in
Lexington and of this number I should think at least fifty are white.
If we could get thirty or forty to join, this would make a good beginn—
ing. Should a union be formed rules could be made that would unite in
the decided benefit of the entire profession. Prices could, perhaps,
be better regulated and shops could be kept better. As to closing
promptly at eight o'clock each evening all would be required to do this
and do it promptly so as not to work a hardship on any.

Call For Strike

Issued and men are quiting in Western District.
Madisonville, Ky., April 16.

President Wood's Call for a strike of the miners in this district
has gone into effect. At the Monarch Mines, located near town, the
mine organizers claim to have at least three-fourths of the men, while
Supt. Dillin claims that only twentyuseven stopped workto the call.

The Reinecke Geal Company claims to have lost but thirteen men.
President Woods say that no less than seventy—five responded to the call
He declares that the mines of the Carbcndale and Crabtree Coal Companies
were completely tied up. This the operators deny.

At Earlington the miners claim to have won a victory, but the opera-
tors say but twelve men joined the strikes. The operators have agents
in the South looking for new men, and they are coming in on all trains.
One train last night brought thirty men and they will be put to work
tomorrow.

Labor Unions

Of The City To Form A Central Labor Body.

At a meeting last night in the Printery building of the various lab-
or organizations of the city it was decided to amalgamate the labor
unions of Lexington and give them an official and working head.

It is the intentions of the gentlemen composing the unions to form
A Central Labor Union to be composed of delegates from the various
bodies, in other words to reorganize the Central Labor. Council which
was in existanCe here until about eighteen months ago, but which it is
claimed was forced to disband because of political entanglements. After
full and free discussion of the matter it was decided to call a meeting
of all persons interested in the above move Sunday afternoon at 2:30
o'clock in Red Men's. Hall, in the Lancaster building on Main Street.
The call not only invites all labor unions to participate, but includes
any branch of labor which is contemplating the organizing of a Union.

A member of the Conference stated that under present conditions labor
in the city of Lexington is disorganized, in that no union was aware of
the strength of any other union. He said: "It is for the purpose of
bringing us nearer together that we want a union, so that through it all
difference can be settled by one head."

Turned Back

Sheriffs Posse Stopped Threatened Invasion Of Indiana Miners.
Evansville Ind., April 19.

The proposal visit of the Indiana miners to Kentucky came to naught.
This morning they were met at Sebree by a Sheriff's posse and after
listening to the reading of the intimidation law were ordered back to
their boat. They obeyed the order and marched back about three miles
to the place of landing.

Warrants have been issued for the arrest of those leaders of the band .
and will be served if they return to Kentucky.

There was great excitement at Sebree and the entire population was
out to see the termination of what proved to be a bloodless encounter.

The Indiana miners had threatened to invade Kentucky and force the
Indiana scale on the Kentucky Workman, and trouble would have ensued
had they carried out their threat, as the mine operators on the Ken—

. tucky side had prepared to meet them. Unquestionably a bloody encounter
with the officers of the laminae been averted.

of today's meeting, to take steps toward the organization of a Central
Labor Union, to be 00mposed of delegates from every trades Union in the
City. The Committee requests that only trades now organized attend the
meeting, but all trades contemplating organiztion are invited to attend.
