Basil Hayden, who became the University of Kentucky's first basketball All-Amcrican in 1921, coached the Wildcats during the 1926-27 season, becoming the first UK alumnus to return as coach. Forty-six years later, Joe B. Hall, who was on the 1948-49 UK squad, became the second alumnus coach at UK.

James Park, who coached the 1916 UK basketball team for athletic director J. J. Tigcrt. was a three-sport star at UK, earning letters in football, basketball and baseball. He scored five touchdowns rushing against Earlham in 1914 for a UK record that still stands. Park played major baseball after graduating from UK and later was a noted judge and attorney.
