? Bob Boyd had seen the opposition at its best. In the end he knew his club was no mutch lor the University ol Kentucky basket-bull team.
"Kentucky played well and beat us in every way possible." said Boyd, head man of the Mississippi State Bulldogs. You see. Kentucky hud just crushed Boyd's team 88-67 before 23,548 fans at Rupp Arena.
11 was a game which had shades of December for the Wildcats und featured a totul teum effort.
Many of the UK pluyers hud a good game, but the play of forward Kenny "Sky" Walker sKxxl out the most. The freshman poured in 23 points und grubbed 13 rebounds to leud UK in both categories.
State jumped out to an early 16-0 lead, but the hosts buttled buck und bv intermission
owned a 39-31 edge. In the second half the 'Cats started to pull away with a Dirk Minniefield dunk, u slam in which his head was over the rim at his highest point. Minniefield, of course, is a 6-foot-3 guard.
Kentucky upped its advantage to 25 points with more than five minutes to go and coasted the rest of the way.
? Forward Derrick Hord sank a lust-second desperation shot to allow the 'Cats a 71-69 victory over Auburn.
With the score tied at 69-all, UK called timeout and set up a play where it would spread out the floor and get the ball inside to Melvin Turpin. Dirk Minniefield was trapped outside and could not get it into Turpin. He then passed the ball over to Hord, who coolly sank the basket for the thrilling victory.

? In winning for the 18th time in 22 decisions, Kentucky played perhaps its best game of the season by defeating Alabama 77-62. Kentucky jumped out to an 18-9 lead, were ahead by 13 at the half and opened the margin to 24 midway through the second half. The victory gave Joe B. Hall's troops revenge. Earlier this season UK lost 59-55 at Tuscaloosa.
The Wildcats' combination of man-to-man and zone defense caused the Tide to hit a terrible 30.4 percent from the floor on 21 of 69. Kentucky's offense was highlighted by 10 dunks and led by seven-foot center Sam Bow ie's 21 points and 14 rebounds. Bowie hit eight of 11 shots.
Guard Dirk Minniefield tossed in 16 points and dished out nine assists. Jim Master scored 10 points.TCen Johnson led Alabama with 21 points while All-Southeastern Conference forward Eddie Phillips scored 16. but hit just four of 15 from the field. The 'Cats outrebounded the Tide 48-43.
? Leading by two points at 38-36 with 8:32 showing on the clock in Oxford. The University of Kentucky reeled off seven straight points following a timeout and went on to defeat Mississippi 62-55 before a hostile crowd.
Center Sam Bowie led the Wildcat charge by converting a three-point play on a turnaround jumper and scoring off an offensive rebound. Bowie went on to score 13 points in the final eight and a half minutes and lead Kentucky with 25 points and eight rebounds. Bowie hit nine of 14 from the field. He was the only Wildcat in double figures.
Lexington Lafayette product Dirk Minniefield contributed eight points and the same amount of assists. He was also involved in an altercation with Mississippi playmaker Sean Tuohy. which resulted in the game being stopped following debris poured on the floor.
Elston Turner led the Rebels with 19 points. Both teams shot well, with UK hitting 22 of 39 from the field and Ole Miss 23 of 39 points.
The win was also a milestone for UK coach Joe B. Hall. It marked his 200th career victory at Kentucky, in his ninth season as head coach.

?The Kentucky Wildcats took their game downtown to defeat Georgia 86-72. Hot shooting Kevin Grevey, who scored 27 points, and outstanding all-around team defense were the keys.
?Auburn coach Bob Davis' new career got a lift as the Tigers stunned the Wildcats 99-97 in overtime. The loss for the Wildcats dropped them out of the SEC championship race, as they dropped to 7-5 in the league standings.
Grevey kept his scoring pace, netting 32 points for the Wildcats.
? Kentucky squeezed past the Big Orange
of Tennessee with a 61-58 victory. Kevin Grevey led the 'Cats with 16 points and teammate Ronnie Lyons added 12.

?The University of Kentucky streaked by the Florida Gators 104-78 in a game which featured a sparkling relief performance from Truman Claytor, a fight and the traditional Wildcat romp.
Claytor hit a 20-footer at the end of the first stanza to give the 'Cats a comfortable 47-37 lead, then opened the second half with five straight baskets to keep the Gators at bay during a time in which they were threatening to rally.
Claytor finished with a team-high 22 points on seven of eight shoting from the field. Larry Johnson was close behind with 21 points on nine of 13 shooting from the field.
Six Wildcats scored in double figures as Jack "Goose" Givens and Rick Robey each pitched in 15. Center Mike Phillips added 13 and Lexington Henry Clay product James Lee scored 10.
Robey hauled in 15 rebounds.
The fight occured in the final minutes when Gator Richard Glasper and UK's Jay Shidler traded punches under the Gator basket. No one was hurt in the brief tangle but both were thrown out of the contest.
Al Bonner led Florida with 23 points.
? Forward Jack Givens poured in 24 points and Rick Robey hauled down 15 boards as the Kentucky Wildcats claimed an 89-82 decision over a stubborn Auburn team at Rupp Arena.
Kentucky threatened to blow the game open several times after opening a 15-point lead in the first stanza, but the Tigers never gave up. However, the Tigers never got closer than the final margin after the early minutes of the contest.
Union County's Larry Johnson followed Givens in the scoring column with 18 points. The inside tandem of Rick Robey and Mike Phillips, aka "King" and "Kong", scored 16 and 13 points, respectively.
Auburn's Mike Mitchell scored 21 for Auburn while Myles Patrick added 18 and Eddie Johnson 16.

Bob McCarthy's boys broke open a close game with a 26-12 scoring spree in the second half, wiping out a five-point Wildcat lead.
Four of Kentucky's five starters fouled out in their efforts to catch up.
Six-foot-seven Bailey Howell led the Bulldogs with 37 points.
Wildcat sophomore Johnny Cox paced the 'Cats with 28 points. Gerry Calvert added 14.
? Kentucky center Ed Beck was rushed to Georgia to see his ailing wife, who is in serious condition with cancer. Beck will miss Kentucky's next game.
? Despite regulars Ed Beck and Adrian Smith not in the lineup, the Kentucky Wildcats eased to a Chicago Stadium college scoring record with a 115-65 win over Loyola.
The final score would have been higher if Loyola had not played a slowdown game in the initial 12 minutes. Dazzling sophomore Johnny Cox paced the Wildcats with 32 points despite sitting out the final 12 minutes.
Vernon Hatton. in his first start since a Dec. 31 appendectomy, scored 20 points.
