     Historical Note
Modern Dance/Kentucky (MD/K) was a non-profit modern dance collective active in Lexington, Ky., from at least 1979 to 1985. Situated at 171 East High Street, the collective offered a 12-week schedule of dance classes- modern, Jazz, ballet, ethnic, and Tai Chi to both adults and children. David C. Johnson was the troupe's treasurer (1981-1983) and board president (1983-1985) during this time period. MD/K comprised a school and, starting in 1982, a performance troupe, Strong and Wild Horses , directed by Shirley Jenkins and Erik Whitmyre.Prior to forming their own company and moving to Kentucky, both were featured soloists with Seattle's Bill Evans Dance Company, first beginning thei dance parternship at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City where both received BFA degrees in modern dance. Strong and Wild Horses , named to reflect the troupe's strong athletic movements , included Jenkins and Whitmyre, along with Mary Bruce Blackburn, Regina Hawkins, Melissa Monteros, and Kurt Fischer. MD/K was funded by the Kentucky Arts Council, the National Endowment for the Arts, the Kentucky Humanities Council, and the Lexington Opera House Fund. Sources:
