It i s i m p r o b a b l e that y o u w i l l a dopt the first c o u r s e : if, t h e n , j ' o u refuse to c o n c u r i n the p i a n o f g r a d u a l e m a n c i p a t i o n , a nd a ct u p o n i t , h o w e v e r y o u m a y l u l l c o n s c i e n c e , y o u a r e l e n d i n g y o u r a i d to perpetuate a d e m o r a l i z i n g a n d c r u e l s y s t e m , w h i c h it w o u l d be a n i n s u l t to G o d to i m a g i n e that he d oes n ot a b h o r a s y s t e m w h i c h e x h i b i t s p o w e r w i t h o u t r e s p o n s i b i l i t y , t oil w i t h o u t r e c o m p e n s e , life without liberty, law without justice, wrongs without redress, i n f a m y w i t h o u t c r i m e , p u n i s h m e n t w i t h o u t g u i l t , a nd f a m i l i e s w i t h o u t m a r r i a g e a s y s t e m w h i c h w i l l n ot o n l y m a k e v i c t i m s o f the present u n h a p p y g e n e r a t i o n , i n flicting u p o n t h e m the d e g r a d a t i o n , the contempt, the lassitude, a n d the a n g u i s h o f hopeless oppression, but w h i c h e v e n a i m s at t r a n s m i t t i n g this h e r i t a g e o f i n j u r y and w o t o t h e i r c h i l d r e n , a n d t h e i r c h i l d r e n ' s c h i l d r e n , d o w n to t h e i r l atest p o s t e r i t y . C a n a n y Christian contemplate, w i t h o u t t r e m b l i n g , his o w n a g e n c y in the p e r p e t u a t i o n o f s u c h a s y s t e m ? A n d w h a t w i l l b e the e n d o f these s cenes o f m i s e r y and v i c e ? S h a l l w e w a i t u n t i l w o r l d l y p o l i t i c i a n s a n d l e g i s l a t o r s m a y rise up a n d bid t h e m c e a s e ? W e w i l l wait in vain. A l r e a d y h a v e we h e a r d the s e n t i m e n t p r o c l a i m e d f r o m h i g h places, a n d b y the v o i c e o f a u t h o r i t y , t hat a r a c e o f s l a v e s is n e c e s s a r y to the e x i s t ence o f f r e e d o m . Is it f r o m those w h o utter s u c h s e n t i ments that w e e x p e c t d e l i v e r a n c e to c o m e ? N o . Ref o r m a t i o n must c o m m e n c e w h e r e we a r c d i v i n e l y t a u g h t t hat " j u d g m e n t must b e g i n a t the house of God."
