Louise Willson Worthington was born on August 16, 1902 in Marianna, Arkansas. She received her A.B. from Arkansas State Teacher's College in 1930 and her M.A. from Columbia. She taught 3rd grade at the University School of the University of Kentucky beginning in 1930. In 1932 she was appointed supervisor of the training school of UK. In order to study the German school system, she spent the summer of 1933 in Berlin, where she observed the influence of Nazism on German elementary school students. Ms. Worthington published "A Year with a Third Grade of the University School" about her experiences teaching children at UK in the Bulletin of the Bureau of School Service in March 1940. In 1948 she was elected president of the Association of Student Teaching, and from 1950 to 1965 she began worked for Ginn and Company Educational Publishers before returning to Lexington in 1965. From 1965 to 1970 she taught at UK's College of Education. In recognition of her outstanding work in education, she received a lifetime achievement award from the MEDCO Nursing Center in Elizabethtown, Kentucky. The Louise Willson Worthington papers and photographs document Ms. Worthington's time in Germany during the 1930s. There are journals and correspondence from this time, as well as letters from Germany written just after World War II. There are also drawings by German schoolchildren, some of which contain pro-Nazi material. The collection also contains postcards, brochures, maps, and photographic prints of Ms. Worthington's time in Germany. Many of the prints have corresponding negatives, which are referenced in the inventory and housed separately. Photographic descriptions were found on the verso of many photographs and are noted with quotation marks. The collection includes a copy of "A Year with a Third Grade of the University School" from the Bulletin of the Bureau of School Service, as well as other typed manuscripts of Ms. Worthington's writing. There is a complete photocopy of a scrapbook of her life and career through 1992. This collection is arranged by format in two series: I. Papers II. Photographs Container List I.
