- Edward Ellegood (1913-1984) was born in Kentucky to Herbert Ellegood (1885-1974) and Annie Bauer (1893-1953). He married Garland Bee Burgraff (1913-1988) and worked as a repairman in Louisville, Kentucky. The couple had no children.
- American Letters collector Wade Hall (1934-2015) was a native of Union Springs, Alabama. Starting in 1962, he lived in Louisville, where he taught English and chaired the English and Humanities/Arts programs at Kentucky Southern College and Bellarmine University. He also taught at the University of Illinois and the University of Florida. He held degrees from Troy State University (B.S.), the University of Alabama (M.A.), and the University of Illinois (Ph.D.). He served for two years in the U.S. Army in the mid-fifties. Dr. Hall was the author of books, monographs, articles, plays, and reviews relating to Kentucky, Alabama, and Southern history and literature. - Scope and Content
- The Edward and Garland Bee Ellegood letters (dated 1935-1988, undated; 0.33 cubic feet; 9 folders) comprises letters written to Edward and Garland Ellegood from relatives and friends in California, Florida, and Kentucky that document life in the twentieth century. The majority of the letters are sent to Edward and Garland from Eleanor Bauer, Edward's aunt. She writes about growing old, her health, living away from family, the weather in California, how much she misses her deceased husband, visits from her children and grandchildren, moving houses, and gossip from other relatives. The couple also receive letters from Garland's cousin, discussing how her children are faring, commiserating with Garland over the loss of a family member, and daily life in Florida. Other letters discuss serving in the military during World War II and the Korean War, the price of antique documents, and personal health.
- The Edward and Garland Bee Ellegood letters collection is part of the Wade Hall Collection of American Letters, which includes correspondence and diaries from all over North America covering the time period of the Civil to Korean Wars. The materials were collected by Wade Hall and document everyday men and women.
