Biography/History

Journalist, Author, Entertainer Born in Paducah, Ky., Cobb was a reporter for the PADUCAH DAILY NEWS at the the age of sixteen, and became managing editor of the paper three years later. He subsequently worked for newspapers in Cincinnati and Louisville. In New York he worked for Joseph Pulitzer's evening and sunday WORLD from 1905 to 1911. He was a very successful, frequently anthologized author of short stories and a staff contributor to the SATURDAY EVENING POST (1911-1922) and COSMOPOLITAN magazine (1922-1932). Later in life he worked as a writer and actor in Hollywood.

Scope and Content

The materials consist primarily of Cobb's personal correspondence and provide details on Cobb's books and other writings. Present are twenty- eight letters from Cobb to John Wilson Townsend (61M18) and six letters from Townsend to Cobb. There are also letters from Cobb to Thomas B. Costain (56M271), Harold Palmer, Mrs. Paul Burn, Mrs. Margaret E. Bruner, Theodore J. Richard (65M129), Uriah Seeley, Jimmy Starr, John M. Saunders, Arthur Vance (61M32). A letter to Pirie MacDonald (66W1) discusses a publisher, George H. Doran. The papers also contain photographs (removed) and memorabilia. They also contain typescript copies (56M8) of a forward to Glen Clift 's book THE GOVERNORS OF KENTUCKY which was published separately as a pamphlet and "At the feet of the enemy," which was published in Cobb's book FAITH, HOPE AND CHARITY.
