Madison Proves Something To BU Coach Nike larvis
Boston University coach Mike Jarvis thought that Richard Madison was the man to foul in the final moments last Saturday night. But his decision kinda blew up in his face. The way things had been going for UK at the foul line, however, he probably felt UK would have trouble with at the line no matter who was shooting.
Madison came through in the clutch, hitting eight-of-eight in the final 2:37. Kentucky led 69-62 prior to Madison's free throw heroics.
Before the game, he was averaging 40.0 percent from the line, (four-of 10).
"We were fouling (intentionally) at the very end," said Jarvis. "We didn't come here to have a close game and be able to go back home and say 'we lost to Kentucky by less than 10.'
"Whenever we play, we play to win."
In hopes of winning. Jarvis instructed his players to foul No. 42.
"Sometimes bad shooters have off nights at the free throw line. I think a couple of Kentucky's bad shooters had off nights and the ball went in for them," kidded Jarvis.
Madison's reaction?
"Their bench was saying. 'He's only a 30-percent shooter; he'll miss," noted Madison. "I know damn well I'm better than that."
As a team Kentucky entered the contest hitting only 56 percent of its free throws.

With the holiday season now upon us, it's time to bring out the ole crystal ball and handicap the post-season contests. Already a few bowls have been played and this year's bowl bonanza will culminate with the battle for the national championship on Jan. 2 when Miami (Fla.) meets Penn State in the Fiesta Bowl.
This long awaited showdown will be televised live by NBC before a prime time audience.
Last season my selections were not too bad10-6-1. But there's always need for improvement. So, here goes. . .

two and three game losing streaks for the past two years, Georgia wants to cap off its season with a bowl victory. And what better way to accomplish that feat than to beat Boston College in the Hall of Fame Bowl which now resides in Tampa, Fla. After getting off to a rocky 1-3 start, BC won its last seven games. But of those seven, only victories over Maryland and a rout of Holy Cross stick out. On the other hand Georgia defeated Auburn and in-state rival Georgia Tech (first time in two years) in the last two games of the season. Georgia players want to finish the season with nine victories, which hasn't been done since 1983. I believe that extra incentive will be there in Florida, but it won't be easy. Prediction: GEORGIA BY 4
Sun Bowl Alabama and Washington are two teams that received much billing in many of the preseason Top 10 rankings. But you have to consider if the rampant rumors of Ray Perkins leaving Alabama to go back into the NFL with the Tampa Bay Bucs will have an adverse effect on the Crimson Tide. Bama was not playing its best football late in the year, finishing with an unimpressive victory over Temple and a hard fought loss to Auburn. Washington, meanwhile, blew out in-state rival Washington State 44-23, which had been a thorn in the Huskies' side in the past. Washington's Don James is one of the better bowl coaches in the country and should have the Huskies ready for this one. Prediction: WASHINGTON BY 7.
Gator BowlA Clemson and Stanford matchup gives the folks in Jacksonville a pretty interesting ballgame. For the most part, Clemson had only one upset this seasona win over Georgia. The Tigers also pasted North Carolina, deserving merit as well. Stanford, which has one of the suprise teams in the country, finished the season in exciting fashion with a victory over Arizona. A national television audience found out what a complete passing team, a la NC. State, can do to Clemson's defense. Stanford's head man. Jack Elway, is one of college football's premier authorities on the passing game. His team should fill the air with plenty of footballs. . .enough to knock Clemson senseless. A Stanford win looks likely despite a huge contengent of orange clad fans in Jacksonville. Prediction: STANFORD BY 16
Aloha Bowl Here's another PAC 10 team against an ACC squadArizona vs. North Carolina. The PAC 10 had its best performance in years this season, sending five bowl teams to postseason play. Arizona has a potent offense engineered by quarterback Alfred Jenkins. Carolina, which is making its first appearance to a bowl since 1983, hasn't beaten anybody this season. Arizona's talent will prevail. Prediction: ARIZONA BY 17
Vols Hope To Stop Gophers In Their Tracks
Liberty BowlYou've heard of movies made for television, well this gridiron duel was made for fans. Both Minnesota and Tennessee were lured by the Liberty Bowl in hopes of filling up the Memphis stadium. What the Liberty will be getting are two teams which experienced up and down campaigns. However, both teams came on strong at the end of the season. Minnesota upset Michigan while Tennessee beat Ole Miss, Kentucky and Vanderbilt rather easily. Being in Memphis, the Volunteers should hold a home field advantage. The natural surface in Memphis should slow down Gopher signal caller Ricky Fogge. This one looks close with the outcome being decided by a Carlos Reveiz field goal. TENNESSEE BY3.
Freedom Bowl For the first time in quite some while, BYU didn't win the WAC Conference, which earns the victor a spot in the Holiday Bowl. This year's WAC winner was San Diego State.
a squad that beat the Cougars 10-3 in late November. UCLA usually saves its best for last and if its 45-25 victory over USC is any indicator, then this one has 'romp" written all over it. Prediction: UCLA BY 21.
Holiday Bowl San Diego State is a nice fresh face for the Holiday Bowl and the WAC winners will be playing before the hometown faithfuls, too. In fact, its coach Denny Stoltz may be familiar to UK fans. He was the coach whose Bowling Green team upset Kentucky two seasons ago. His San Diego State squad will be facing an Iowa team which was decimated by injuries all season long. These days Iowa may be in better health, bul will have a haul time dealing with a highly motivated San Diego State crowd. In fact, this game may be the biggest one in Stale's history, dating back to the Don Coryell years. Upset special. Prediction: SAN DIEGO STATE BY 6.
Ail-American BowlThe oddsmakers evidently think this con test will be a blowout as Florida State has been made a solid two-touchdown favorite over the Hoosiers of Indiana. However, the Seminoles didn't beat a big-time opponent during this past regular season. This is a rare occurance for Bobby Bowden's club which year-in and year-out plays one of the nation's toughest slates. UK fans may want to get their notepads out for this affair because Indiana will invade Commonwealth Stadium next season on Sept. 19. I've got the feeling that Bill Mallory will have the Hoosiers ready to play. IU is making its first bowl appearance since 1979. FSU will definitely have its hands full. Prediction: FLORIDA STATE BY 4.
Bluebonnett Bowl Two teams with similar styles of play will meet in Houston for this year's contest. Both Colorado and Baylor rely heavily upon their running games similar to Ray Perkins" Crimson Tide. Baylor coach Grant Teaff has shown interest in a change of pace as he is a candidate for the post at Southern Cal. Colorado, for the most part, has been a Cinderilla story for the last two seasons under the guidance of Bill McCartney. The Buffaloes almost pulled off a post-season stunner last season. The crew from Big Eight country barely lost to Washington in last year's Freedom Bowl. This year they will succeed in pulling off an upset. Prediction: COLORADO BY 5.
Victory Ride Should Await Dooley In Atlanta
Peach Bowl Two surprise teams will lock horns in Atlanta in hopes of filling up the stands at Fulton-County Stadium. Both Virginia Tech and North Carolina State are the new kids on the J post-season block. NC. State looked like ACC champions until quarterback Eric Kramer got hurt late in the year. Virginia Tech has found ways to win all year long. I predict Hokie coach Bill Dooley will go out a winner in his last game as Virginia Tech head coach of the Gobblers. Prediction: VIRGINIA TECH BY 9.
Citrus Bowl They may have to rename this one the "Million Dollar Mismatch" It's been well-documented that the Citrus Bowl officials offered a bid to Auburn coach/athletic director Pat Dye 15 minutes before Orange Bowl officials came calling. Dye was a man of his word as Auburn kept its committment to play USC in Orlando on New Year's Day. Another mistake might have been madeUSC's firing of a first-class coach like Ted Tollner who had posted consistend winning seasons. Tollner will go out on a winning note. Prediction: USC BY 1.
Cotton Bowl Texas A&M is starting to make the Cotton Bowl a part of its schedule as the Aggies have reservations for their second consecutive appearance in Dallas on New Year's Day. This year they will be facing an Ohio State club that is coming off a heart-breaking 24-22 loss to Michigan. OSU's Jim Karasatus wil" drill A&M's secondary with passes to Ail-American reciver Chris Carter all day long. Prediction: OHIO STATE BY 11
Rose Bowl This bowl game is one of the toughest to figure. It's Arizona State, breaking in new ground in Pasadena, to face Michigan, the always tough club from Big Ten country. Tradition alone says take the Pac-10 team. But ASU has never been in the Rose Bowl. The flip of the coin turned up heads. . .so, go with ASU. Prediction: ARIZONA STATE BY 1.
Sugar Bowl LSU may have revenge on its mind when the Tigers head over to New Orleans to greet Nebraska. It was two years ago when LSU underwent the misfortune of having quarterback Jeff I Wickersham throw numerous interceptions into the hands of Husker defenders. Nebraska may have a rough time reaching the performance level it had against Oklahoma, suffering a disheartening 20-17 loss in the season finale. Earlier, I picked two coaches who will go out in style at their respective schools (Bill Dooley and Ted Tollner). Arnsparger should also prevail in his last game on the
