FIVE YEARS AGO
'In a game which was marred by 67 personal fouls, Kentucky defeated visiting Mississippi State 80-65 behind Dwight Anderson and Kyle Macy.
85 foul shots were taken in the game, 56 by UK. Eight different players fouled out, six on State's team. Anderson led UK with 26 points, with 18 of them coming at the foul line. Macy hit seven of nine shots from the field and scored 19 points, many coming when State would start to make a run.
LaVon Williams added 14 points and Jay Shidler, making his third straight start, hit some clutch baskets for ten points. Anderson also had a career high 14 rebounds. Greg Grim and Wiley Peck scored 22 and 20 points, respectively, for State. UK led 35-30 at the half.
*With a screaming capacity crowd at Rupp Arena, UK downed Alabama 80-71 in probably the Cats' best game since December.
"We played with as much emotion as we have shown since December," said Coach Joe Hall.
UK hit 29 of 50 shots from the field, led by nine of 16 from Kyle Macy, who scored 22 points. Dwight Anderson scored 20 points and forward LaVon Williams chipped in 17. Reggie King scored 36 for Alabama, which trailed 38-33 at the half.
"Kentucky came out slow and never picked up as they dropped a 68-58 decision at Vanderbilt. UK hit only 23 of 58 shots for 39.7 percent and fell behind 11-4 in the early going.
Charles Davis led Vandy by hitting a Memorial Coliseum record 13 of 15 shots for 31 points. Kyle Macy led UK with 24 points, most of them coming in the second half. Davis and Macy were
the only two players to score in double figures.
Vandy led 39-26 at the half.
TEN YEARS AGO
*In a wild game which saw Kentucky's Truman Claytor and Tennessee's Johnny Darderi thrown out for trading punches, Tennessee held on to defeat the Cats 92-85 in Knoxville. The score was tied 48-48 at the half. Ernie Grunfield led Tennessee with 32 points while Mike Jackson scored 28 points, many coming in the clutch. Mike Phillips led UK with 20 points, Jack Givens had 18 and Larry Johnson 14, Reggie Warford 12 and James Lee 10. Seven technical fouls were called during the game, four on UK.

'Kentucky was able to hit only 11 of 23 free throws as they fell 86-81 to Georgia in Athens. Jackie Dorsey led Georgia with 24 points. Mike Phillips scored 18 points and had 23 rebounds for Kentucky. 'Kentucky was devastating as they beat Auburn 114-76. It was the Cats' eighth victory in nine SEC games. Kentucky made 47 of 75 field goal attempts and 20 of 23 free throw attempts. Tom Parker led all scorers with 27 points while Tom Payne tossed in 23 and Kent Hollenbeck 18.

'Behind torrid shooting, UK routed Mississippi 121-86. The Wildcats established a Memorial Coliseum record with the 121 points, in opening the second half of SEC play with an 8-1 record. Johnny Neumann of Ole Miss scored 46 points to lead all scorers. Tom Payne scored 24 for UK and Kent Hollenbeck netted 20.
'Kentucky distance runner Vic Nelson broke a field house record plus a meet and UK record last week. He covered three miles in 13:31.6 ranking him with the top ten distance runners in the country.
THIRTY YEARS AGO
'Duke refused to quit but Kentucky held on to an 81-76 win over the highly rated Blue Devils before a full house in Memorial Coliseum. Each time UK started to pull away, Duke rallied back. Jerry Bird paced UK with 29 points and 20 rebounds. Vern Hatton scored 18, Phil Grawemeyer 11. Joe Belmont paced Duke with 29 points.
'Veteran line coach Clarence 'Buckshot' Underwood, a member of the UK football staff since 1948, has resigned to take a post as head coach at a Texas high school. The popular Underwood will be joined by UK frosh coach John Shelton.
*A 20-foot jump shot with nine seconds left by Bob Burrow gave UK an 82-81 win over Auburn at Montgomery and kept alive the Cats' SEC hopes. A near-capacity crowd saw the thriller, in which the score was tied nine times and the lead changed hands 22 times, four in the final 75 seconds. Sophomore Vern Hatton scored 25 points, Burrow 19. Jim O'Donnell led Auburn with 22.
