eron probably made as improvement as any player < basketball team last year, and has worked very, very hard over the summer. He has gotten a lot stronger, he's increased his vertical jump, and he's shooting the ball a lot better. I really expect him to take much more of a leadership role."
FANTASTIC
UK ranks fourth nationally in the sale of souvenirs. Last year UK grossed $492,000 in royalties from officially licensed products such as T-shirts, sweatshirts, hats, umbrellas, playing cards, jackets, key chains and
of schedule we have, to prepare for the future. Third, I want to recruit three of the top 50 players in America, and fourth, I would like to finish in the top four in the SEC."
Pitino's returning letterwinners form a solid, youthful nucleus for the 1990-91 squad. Only leading scorer Derrick Miller departs from last year's roster. The 6-5 shooting guard averaged 19.1 points per game and finished an up-and-down UK career on a high note with 1,156 career points, placing him 27th on the UK all-time scoring list. The bombingest of "Pitino's Bombinos," Miller took 289 of UK's 810 three-point attempts, over one-third. He finished in the top 10 nationally in three-pointers made per game, averaging 3.5.
Senior Reggie Hanson, last year's team MVP, should see much more time at his natural position power forward after being forced to play center due to a lack of roster height and depth. Hanson is UK's leading returning scorer (16.4) and rebounder (7.1) and was a second-team All-SEC selection last year.
Forward Deron Feldhaus and swingman John Pelphrey enter their junior seasons with bona fide starting lineup potential. After shedding weight
from a bulky preseason frame, Feldhaus had an outstanding sophomore campaign, finishing second on the team in rebounding (6.7) and third in scoring (14.4). Pelphrey, one of Kentucky's best all-around players, finished fourth on the team in scoring (13.0), third in rebounding (5.3), second in blocks (21), tied for first in steals (61) and second in assists (76). He finished in the SEC's top five in steals, averaging 2.2 per game.
"Hanson, Feldhaus and Pelphrey have worked about as hard as you want your athletes to work in the summertime," Pitino says. "I expect all three of them to have a big year."
Johnathon Davis, a junior in eligibility but a senior academically, also brings experience to Kentucky's front line.
Juniors Sean Woods and Richie Farmer and sophomore Jeff Brassow bring backcourt savvy to the floor. Woods, Kentucky's front-runner for starting point guard honors, finished first in the SEC in assists, averaging 5.9 per game. Farmer, another player who shed more than a few pounds during strength coach "Rock" Oliver's preseason conditioning program, is an outstanding outside shooter. And
